He was born Jan. 20, 1938 in Sioux Falls, S.D. He graduated from Washington High School in 1955 and continued his education to graduate with a B.S.B.A. degree from Augustana Lutheran College in 1961, both of which are located in Sioux Falls. While completing his degree, he served the U.S. in the South Dakota Air National Guard and was honorably discharged on June 12, 1961. In 1960, he married his college sweetheart, Karen Schanck, a marriage that sustained for 20 years. At the same time, he began work with Exxon, a career that lasted until 1981. He also became a general contractor and continued in that industry as a homebuilder until 2009. In 2001, he met Sue Butson, who became his loving companion until his death. He is remembered by his childhood friend, Sheldon Songstad. He is survived by his children, Jill D. McNatt, Nancy MacHaffie, and Jeffrey Clark Millis; sister, Lainys Brother; and six grandchildren. His final resting place will be at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, N.Y. 10018.
