Steinke Robert "Bob" W. Steinke, 68, of Waldport, Ore., died Feb. 18, 2010 at his home. He was born Feb. 6, 1942 to Ryanholdt and Marion Steinke in Auburn, Calif. He graduated from Trinity High School in Weaverville, Calif. in 1959. He joined the U.S. Army in 1961 as a military police officer and was honorably discharged in 1966. After attending Shasta Community College, where he earned an A.A. degree in police science, he served a total of 17 years as a police officer, 11 of which was out of the east precinct in Portland, Ore. He left in 1982. He had two children by a former marriage, Kathleen (Jerry) Wiseman of Oregon City and Jerome "Jerry" Steinke of Portland. When he married his second wife, Beverly, of Kissimmee, Fla. they decided to work together and attended Commercial Drivers Training Institute of Portland, and became a long-haul, professional driving team for several years. Later, he and Bev attended Western Culinary Institute of Portland and relocated to Show Low, Ariz., where they managed a highly acclaimed bed and breakfast, The Coldstream, for four years. He loved to cook, loved trucks, and enjoyed comedy. He also loved animals, especially his little dog, Godfrey, and any cat that would cross his path. But most of all, he loved people and helping people. He was a volunteer Senior Companion of Lincoln County and worked up until four weeks before his death. He was well known for his beautiful deep voice and friendly outgoing demeanor. He was a giver. He would give anything to anyone, and many times, he literally gave his last dollar to someone, or to help an animal. In the summer of 2007 through the late summer of 2008, he was able to realize his dream of driving a big rig, cross-country one last time. He drove for Swift Transport based out of Phoenix, Ariz. and Troutdale, Ore. He told his wife that being able to drive one last time would make him die a happy man. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, 510 Harney St., Newport OR 97365. Dennis Sr. Everette E. Dennis Sr., 91, of Toledo, Ore., died Feb. 5, 2010. He was born March 7, 1918 in Portland, Ore. to Oscar E. Dennis and Edna Mae Johnson Dennis, both from Oregon pioneer families. His paternal grandfather and sister came to Oregon in 1859, sailing from New York and crossing the Isthmus of Panama prior to the building of the canal. Two years later, their parents arrived traveling over land via covered wagon and settled at Brooks, near Salem. He attended high school in Eddyville and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, forerunner of the U.S. Air Force, in 1939 and rose to the rank of Master Sergeant in military intelligence in the Pacific Theater. In 1941, he married Kathryn Platt Dennis, also a fourth-generation Oregonian. After the war, he joined the Oregon State Employment Commission in Portland and was part of the team that wrote the Dictionary of Occupations, focusing on jobs in the timber industry. It was later adopted by the U.S. Department of Labor. In 1946, he moved to Toledo with his wife and family. He worked first for the employment service and subsequently in logging and sawmills before setting up his own painting business in the late 1950s. He served as commander of the Lincoln County Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans several times and was post adjutant and treasurer at the time of his death. He was a familiar fixture each spring when he sold the signature forget-me-nots to raise money for the DAV. He also helped organize the annual Eddyville homecoming picnic for many years. He was especially proud of his children and their remarkable educational achievement that included a Ph.D., three master's degrees, four bachelor's degrees, an architecture degree and an associate degree. He was present in 2002 when his son, Everette, who served as dean of the University of Oregon School of Journalism, was inducted into the Oregon Journalism Hall of Achievement. After retirement in the 1980s, he and his wife traveled widely, including trips to London, Boston, Montreal, Washington D.C. and several trips to New York City. He was in New York in October 2009, where he visited the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid museum and its collection of World War II aircraft. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Kathryn Platt Dennis. He is survived by six children, Everette Dennis, Jr. of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., Melvin Dennis of New York, N.Y., Barbara Thornburg of Bend, Ore., Donna Dennis, of Portland, Ore., Patricia McCarthy of Corvallis and Marj Dennis of Corvallis; and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, at the American Legion Hall, 424 W. Olive St. in Newport. He will be buried at Yachats Memorial Park following the memorial service. Note: "Yachats" is pronounced "Ya-hots". Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: marysday Surnames: Quetschke, Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oregon.counties.lincoln/5290/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The News Times Newport, OR 97365 Posted: Wednesday, Mar 10th, 2010 Vernon C. Quetschke Vernon C. Quetschke, 84, died Feb. 22, 2010 from complications after surgery. He was born Dec. 5, 1925 to William and Estella Quetschke, the second of four children. He was raised on the family homestead on Woods Creek in Philomath where his sister still resides today. He attended school in Philomath and at age 16 began working at a local sawmill. He then served in the Navy until his honorable discharge in July 1945. It was while stationed at Alameda, Calif. that he met his future wife, Betty, who was also stationed there. They married on Dec. 15, 1945, and he returned to the sawmill occupation. They moved to Harlan in 1949, where they raised their four children and lived for the next 61 years. It was at this time he became the millwright at the 3-G Company’s Harlan Sawmill and held that position for the next 35 years, until the mill’s closure in 1984. He was a “jack of all trades” at the mill, performing the duties of an electrician, plumber and everything else that needed to be done to ensure the mill’s operation. For a few years after the mill closed, he worked for Thompson Timber Company as a dump truck driver and a grade operator. His hobbies included bowling, fishing, hunting, camping, card games, sudoku puzzles and an occasional visit to the casino. In his later years, he enjoyed feeding and watching all different kinds of birds. One thing he was very good at and enjoyed doing was taking an idea and moving it step by step through the process until it was finished and working perfectly. One of his lifelong passions was the annual family elk-hunting trip to eastern Oregon. He didn’t miss a single season - last fall was his 57th consecutive year to the same area he first started at. He thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the trip. He had things he believed in and rules he thought a person should live by, but he didn’t preach or judge those who felt differently. He just went about his life by setting a great example. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Betty; his brother, Virgil; and his sister, Helen. He is survived by daughter, Sharon (Gary) of Siletz; sons, Mike (Ginger) of Albany, Randy (Jackie) of Burnt Woods, and Mitchell (Ashley) of Harlan; sister, Ethel; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held on Feb. 26 at Twin Oaks Cemetery in Albany, Ore. Twin Oaks Funeral Home in Albany handled arrangements.
