He was born April 25, 1944 to Festus and Jean (Brown) Nowark at the Bainbridge Navel Base in Maryland. He graduated from Colton High School in California and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He worked for Rohr Aircraft and built the engines for the first 747 airplane. Deciding to become a carpenter by trade, he moved to Big Bear, Calif. then to Alaska, the last frontier, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, architectural drafting, bowling, and politics. The family later moved to Washington, then settled in Depoe Bay, where he loved the sound and smell of the Pacific Ocean. He continued to be involved in politics while fulfilling his lifelong dream of building his own house. He lived his last years watching the ocean, reading, and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Festus and Jean Nowark. He is survived by his sister, Connie Smith of Alaska; the mother of his children, Chrisalyn Nowark of Bonney Lake, Wash.; his sons, Troy Nowark of Alhambra, Calif., Shawn Nowark of Milton, Wash., Ty Nowark of Lincoln City, Ore., and Sandy Nowark of Bonney Lake, Wash.; daughters, Traci Hossfeld of Boise, Idaho, and Shawnette Nowark of Buckley, Wash.; and seven grandchildren. A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. on April 25 at Coast Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 1505 NE Sixth Dr. in Lincoln City. Flowers may be received at Coast Vineyard on Friday, April 23. He was born Oct. 9, 1940 to Merrill and Vivian Smith. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years. He became a HAM operator at the age of 12 (KB7US), which became his lifetime hobby. He especially loved computing and spent several hours a day on computers. He was often called the "computer guru" by his friends and family, who he would help with their computer problems. He was born June 13, 1928 to Uriah Hamblet and Vida (Howard) Hamblet in Oregon City, Ore. He attended Oregon State University and graduated from the University of Oregon. After college, he enlisted in the military, serving in the Pentagon during the Korean War. Afterward, returned to Oregon to work for the Social Security Administration. He was transferred to Baltimore in the 1960s to work at SSA headquarters and rose to the rank of manager in the foreign claims branch serving in Sicily, Mexico and other overseas locations. He retired to Oregon. He was the chairman of Bayshore Road Commission. He enjoyed fishing in Alaska and in Oregon lakes with his lifetime friend, Ned Takasumi, and grandson, Will. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Hamblet, who died at age three. He is survived by his wife, Jane Hamblet of Waldport; children, William Randall Hamblet, Susan Harper Hamblet and Matthew Lewis Hamblet, all of Virginia; sibling, Charlcia Gentry of Tucson, Ariz. and two grandchildren. Hatch Kenneth M. Hatch, 87, of Newport, Ore. died April 18, 2010 at his home. He was born Oct. 16, 1922 to Nick K. Hatch and Hattie M. Hatch in Unalaska, Alaska. When he was five, he moved to Florence, Ore., where he attended grade school and high school. He entered Oregon State College in 1940, where his ROTC unit was called to active duty in 1943. While in the service, he was selected to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated in 1947. During an Army career, he obtained an MS Degree in civil engineering from the California Institute of Technology. He also participated in the Korean War, where he was awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and other decorations. During the Vietnam War, he commanded an engineer construction group in Thailand, where he received the Legion of Merit. He retired from the service in 1970 as a full colonel and worked in Eugene as a professional engineer until 1981. He married Althea Mendenhall of Summit, N.J. in 1949, and they enjoyed raising a family of four children. He moved to Newport in 1985, where in retirement, he enjoyed boating, fishing and woodcarving. At various times, he volunteered at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Oregon Coast Community College and as a driver for Meals-on-Wheels. He was a member of the American Legion, the Retired Officers of the Emerald Empire and the Army Engineer Association. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Herbert; and by his wife of over 50 years, Althea Hatch. He is survived by his son, David Hatch, of Portland, Ore.; son, Keith Hatch, of Ridgefield, Wash.; daughter, Aileen Frey, of Eagle, Idaho; and six grandchildren. No service is planned. She lived in Salem until 1969, and then lived in Waldport until 1995, when she moved back to Salem. She managed a variety and drug store in Portland in the 1940s. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and needlework. She married Theodore J. Loew on May 23, 1946 in Vancouver, Washington. He preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 1997. She is survived by three sons, Calvin C. Palmer of Keizor, Ronald D. Palmer of Long Beach, CA, and Jon B. Palmer of Yuma, AZ; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A native of Saginaw, Mich., Mr. Berry attended DePaul University where he was named to Phi Beta Kapp and received his master's degree in clinical psychology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Mr. Berry spent 15 years with AllSTATE Insurance, and later became self-employed owining serveral businesses. His most recent accomplishment was in Corvallis where he bought a single family home and successfully converted it to the Harrison House Bed and Breakfast. MILLER Word has been received of the death of Elsworth D. "ED" Miller, aged 62 of Portland. His mother, Mrs. Ida Louis Miller, passed away a little less than a month ago, and was buried in the Eureka Cemetery at Newport. Funeral services for Mr. Miller were held at the Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham January 21, followed by interment in the Willamette National Cemetery. Mr. Miller was born in Portland on October 29, 1909 and died at the Veterans Hospital in Portland, on January 18, after an extended illness. He had been a Portland resident for the past three years, but had lived most of his life in the Newport area. After his discharge from the Navy, he operated a television and radio repair shop in Newport until illness forced his retirement. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 907 of Portland. Survivors include his widow, Louise; a son, Gerald, of Portland; a brother, Wiley of Sausalito, California; and three grandchildren. JOHNSON Funeral services for Clifford Henry Johnson of Siletz are being held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. in the Newport Chapel of Pacific Mortuaries. Cremation will follow with Inurnment in Chelan Abbey. Johnson was born November 9, 1911 near Quincy, and he died January 23 at his home, following an extended illness. He attended schools in Quincy and moved to Siletz in 1931, where he had lived since. He was a tower engineer on Georgia-Pacific's South Tract logging operation until failing health forced his retirement. He had been hospitalized most of the time for the past eight months. Johnson was a member of the International Woodworkers Union. Survivors include his widow, Caroline of Siletz; and five uncles, Elmer and Fred Colvin of Deer Island, Howard Colvin of Veronia, and Harold and Evans Colvin of Clatskanie. She married Clarence "Chuck" Fleming on June 3, 1962 in Yachats, Ore., and they continued to follow the harvest for some time. They moved to Oregon in 1963, living in Lincoln County and Grand Ronde. A homemaker, she was an avid bowler, posting a 202 average at her highest. She also enjoyed fishing (although she didn't eat her catch), and she was a crafts person, enjoying embroidery, crocheting, painting, sewing and always keeping busy. She was a member of the American Legion Post 116 in Newport, serving as president of the auxiliary for many years. She helped tend bar there and later was a security guard. She was a good listener, and loved animals. She is survived by her husband, Clarence "Chuck" Fleming of Grand Ronde; son, Bobb (Rosie) Fleming of Grand Ronde; daughter, Tina (Allen Reynoldson) Fleming of Newport; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was born Sept. 22, 1959 to Jeanetta and Douglas Gough Sr. in San Diego. He was a resident of Toledo for 20 years, living with his sister. He is survived by his sister, Jennifer Davis; brothers, Terry Gough and Justin Gough; nieces, Hannah Davis, Alex Boydston, Lindsey Boydston, Ashley Boydston and Samantha Gough; and nephews, Joel Davis and James Gough. Lake Arthur "Art" Graham Lake, 77, of Willamina, Ore., died April 12, 2010 at his home. He was born Aug. 5, 1932 to Russel and Josephine Powell Lake in Salem, Ore. He spent his youth in the Gates and Mill City, Oregon area. After high school, he entered the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean conflict. Following his honorable discharge, he became a logger in the Santiam Canyon for Bodicure & Duggin Logging Co. He married Wilda Grey on April 15, 1957 in Reno, Nev. After years of logging, he became a mill worker in Toledo, Ore. for Georgia-Pacific for 20 years. He moved his family to Willamina, where he started working for Hampton Lumber Mill until he retired. He enjoyed hunting and watching old western movies. He also loved having a beer, talking and telling stories with his friends. He also loved his family. He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Lake. He is survived by his wife, Wilda of Willamina; sons, Pat Lake of Willamina, Ted Lake of Port Angeles, Wash., Frank Lake of Washington, and Mike Lake of Newport, Ore.; sisters, JoAnn Schroeder of South Carolina and Vicki Sullivan of Portland, Ore.; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 16, at Fairview Cemetery in Gates, and a memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 17 at the American Legion Hall, 125 North Bridge St. in Sheridan. Memorial donations may be made at First Federal Savings and Loan in Sheridan.
