He was born March 10, 1929 to William and Annabelle Cherry in Havre, Mont. He spent his youth in the Yakima Valley. His career as a millwright took him to Albany, Ore., Newport, Ore., Arcata, Calif.; Clatskanie, Ore. and back to Newport. Upon his return to Newport, he married Beverly J. Case, and they joined their families to make for a total of eight children. Upon retirement in 1990, he and Beverly moved to Crooked River Ranch in eastern Oregon, where they enjoyed the drier climate and spent many hours golfing, became avid gardeners, watched every Western movie ever produced and made plenty of good memories with many friends and family, including his best friend Sammy Bittner. Their door was always open. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Annabelle Cherry; sisters, Dorothy and Corabelle; and brothers Marvin, Donald and Delbert. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Beverly, of The Dalles; daughters, Pamela Docken of Boardman, Cheryl Cherry of Portland, Melanie Ferguson of Georgia, Terri Case of Portland, Denise Baley of Portland, Julianne Duncan of Fairview, Heidi Williams of Jacksonville, Fla.; son, Roger Cherry of St. Helens; sisters, Marjorie Millward of Poulsbo, Wash., Evie Behckne of Boise, Idaho; brother Jim of Sequim, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was 81. Becky was born July 18, 1928, in Oxford, N.Y. to Floyd and Addie Wackford. She graduated from Oxford Academy High School in 1946 and New York State Institute at Cobleskill in 1949. She worked at Susquehanna Valley Home in Binghamton as a preschool teacher and married Walter Stewart on June 2, 1951. The family moved to Sacramento, Calif., in 1957, where Becky worked as a preschool teacher and a Methodist Hospital as a housekeeper. Becky moved to Lincoln City in 2005. She attended Faith Baptist Church with her daughter Tricia, and son-in-law, Joe, as well as the Evangelical Church, with her neighbor Dorothy Bacon. She was designated reader at the Rev. George Moore's Wednesday morning Bible Study at The Dorchester House. She was a devout Christian and loved Jesus with all her heart. She also loved camping, playing cards, Wii bowling, reading and the Sacramento Kings basketball team. She is survived by her children, Ken Stewart, Kathy Hanley and Patricia Felluca; brother Reggie Wackford; sister, Lois Deuel; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Her brothers Ken and Warren died earlier. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at the Evangelical Church, 4406 S.E. Highway 101, Lincoln City. Sleeman Don F. Sleeman of Lincoln City died June 4, 2010, in Newport. He was 76. Don was born Sept. 10, 1933, in Portland to Leonard and Bertha Sleeman. He graduated from high school there and then went to work for the Ford Motor Company for 30 years. Don married Joanne Davitt in Lewiston, Idaho, on Feb. 14, 1953. They were married for 57 years. Don was a member of St. Augustine's, the Lincoln City Catholic church, and of the Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed golf for many years up until his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Sleeman of Lincoln City; daughter Carol Bass of Snyder, Texas; son David Sleeman of North Bend; daughter Jan Loyer of Cambridge, Ohio; sister Darlene Poole of Tigard; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was 92. He was born on Dec. 14, 1917, to Leonard F. and Elida Mae (Bates) Lembkie in Hoquiam, Wash. He lived in Hoquiam until his teen years, then moved with his parents to Longview and then to Portland. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1936. Mr. Lembkie was a charter member of the Oregon Air National Guard, joining the 123rd Observation Squadron at its inception. He served with the U.S. Air Force before and during World War ll, through the European theatre of operations. He attended Northwestern School of Law for two years before following a career in banking and business. His banking experience was with First National Bank of Oregon in Portland and Sweet Home, and with the Lincoln Bank of Lincoln City. He married Dorothy E. Arnold in Portland in 1944. Between 1961 and 1980, Lembkie and his wife owned and operated the Coast-to-Coast store in Tillamook. During that time he served on the city Planning and Zoning Commission for five years. They retired to the Sheridan/McMinnville area in 1982. He was a longtime member of Kiwanis, having served as president in Sweet Home in 1953 and Lincoln City in 1960. He was also a longtime member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. Mr. Lembkie enjoyed most sports, especially golf, bowling, boating and fishing, and also liked to travel. He raced sailboats and cars. He is survived by his son, Fred Lembkie of Gresham, and his daughter and son-in-law, Gini and Dennis Moreland of McMinnville. His beloved wife, Dorothy, died in 1995. Services have been held. She was born July 15, 1914 to Lee and Clara Affolter in Neskowin, Ore. She graduated from Nestucca High School in 1931. After graduation, she moved to Portland to attend business school. She married William F. McQuilliam in April of 1938. During her life, she lived in several different towns and cities in Oregon, Washington and California, but her favorite place was the Oregon coast. She had many different jobs during her lifetime. During World War II she worked at the shipyards in Portland. She worked at two different radio stations, KORE in Eugene and KNPT in Newport. She also managed Mo's Taft during the 1970s and early 1980s. She moved back to Portland in 1994 and worked until the year 2000, when she retired due to health issues. She was a member of the Tillamook Pioneer Association, and a past member of the Neighbors of Woodcraft and the Business and Professional Women of Oregon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill McQuilliam; her parents, Lee and Clara Affolter; and her brother, Leslie Affolter. She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn R. Gillaspie and Toni Braxling, both of Portland; grandchildren, Hal Gillaspie of Colorado Springs, Colo., Cathy Gillaspie Roesch of Portland, Patti Braxling Smith of Toledo, Tim Braxling of Newport, and Ron Braxling of Tillamook; and 12 great-grandchildren. After graduating from high school in West Linn, he spent two years serving honorably in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of 2CSV and being awarded the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He later worked from 1940 through 1982 at the Crown Zellerbach West Linn Mill. He married Mary Jane McFall in West Linn on Aug. 26, 1950. He was an avid sports fan. He loved fishing, cribbage, making sauerkraut and his one-of-a-kind pickles. He had a love for animals, but above all for his dog, Rusty. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane. She worked at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City as a cage cashier. Before moving to Otis, she had lived and worked in Grapeview, Wash. She loved listening to Roy Orbison, as well as any golden oldies. She loved playing cards with her sister, and she had a passion for horses. She was known by her family and friends for making great fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Mike. She is survived by her daughters, Tina (Robert) Carter, of Lincoln City, and Georgina Dickenson, of Otis; her son, Tim (Kim) Hauber of Tigard; one sister and brother-in-law of Otis; one sister of Salem, and one brother and sister-in-law of Olympia, Wash.; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. "Bob" Updenkelder, 89, of Newport, Ore., died May 26, 2010 in Hillsboro, Ore. He was born June 1, 1921 to Ervin and Elizabeth Updenkelder in Petoskey, Mich. His childhood was spent in Oregon City. He moved to the Newport area in 1953, where he owned and operated Updenkelder's Auto Electric. He was active in local politics, serving as councilman and mayor during the 1960s. During his mayoral term, the sister city agreement with Mombetsu, Japan was formed. He was involved politically at the state level, helping the Republican party with local candidate placement in state offices. He was a veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Pensacola. During his later life, he renewed many of his friendships, attending yearly reunions of his shipmates. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and spending time with his family. In 2006, he moved to the Portland area. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (See) Updenkelder; daughters, Sandi (Frank) LaRoche and Bev Updenkelder, and son, Doug (Shirley) Updenkelder, all of Newport; stepdaughter Linda (See) Gavin of Portland; grandchildren, Bob LaRoche, Tim LaRoche, Andrea Cohn, David McClellan, Kate Mason, Jenni Bregman, Matt Updenkelder, Pat Gavin and Angie Gavin; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was born Oct. 25, 1924 to John W. and Genevieve Charleville of Glendale, Calif. She was a graduate of Long Beach Polytechnic High School and attended Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and Vrije Academy in The Hague, The Netherlands. She was raised in Southern California, where her father was city manager for the cities of Glendale, Pasadena and Long Beach. In 1945, she worked at the Douglas Aircraft plant to support the war effort. Later, she encountered a young Navy lieutenant in the elevator in a hotel, who invited her to a ship's commissioning. The war was on, and he returned to fight in the Pacific. In June of that year, he called her from Pearl Harbor to ask her to marry him, and on June 25, they were wed. As a Navy wife and homemaker, she lived in 27 places over 30 years. She was an accomplished artist, expressing herself most often in watercolors. In her 60s and 70s, she painted and sold thousands of miniature watercolors at the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Beach and at the Laguna Sawdust Festival. Throughout her adult years, a first love of Billye's, besides her husband and family, was her church. She was a devoted Christian Scientist, having been healed through Christian Science of a number of illnesses, including the effects of a serious fall and of malaria. She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Mass. and of Christian Science Society in Newport. She served her church as Christian Science Reading Room librarian, on the church executive board, and chair of a committee hosting a regional youth meeting in Southern California. In 2007, she and her husband moved to Newport to be closer to their family members. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Char-lee Lavrakas Hill. She is survived by her husband, Lefteris Lavrakas, of Newport; daughters, Paula Jayne (Richard) Lavrakas Bray, of Ventura, Calif. and Debra Elaine (Douglas) Palm of Beaverton, Calif; son, John William (Melody) Lavrakas of Newport; son-in-law, Russell Hill, of Tustin, Calif.; stepson, Eric Bray of San Clemente, Calif.; stepdaughter, Heather Bray, of Anaheim, Calif.; granddaughters, Miranda Lavrakas (Nick) Wood, of Salem, Emily Palm (Matthew) Mulica, of Golden, Colo., Chelsea Palm of Beaverton, Laura Hill (John) Lochen of Norwood, Mass. and Robyn Hill (Martin) Gonzalez of Tustin, Calif.; grandsons, James Lavrakas of Burbank, Calif., Robert Lavrakas of Newport, Garrett Palm of Brooklyn, N.Y., Steven Resnick of Richmond, Va. and Daniel (Erin) Hill of Victoria, B.C. Hartsel, 68, of Siletz, Ore., died May 29, 2010 in Newport, Ore. He was born Nov. 24, 1941 to Hayes and Maxine Hartsel in Lodi, Ohio. He served in the Navy for four years. He worked as a banker for 41 years. He served on the Lincoln County Sheriff's Posse since 1975, and served on the Lincoln County Fair Board for 30 years. He married Liz in August of 1991. Jennifer Ashely, Vanessa and Jimmy Howard, Leanne Ivy and Colleen Hickey all had a very special place in his heart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hayes and Maxine Hartsel. He is survived by his wife, Liz Hartsel of Siletz; daughters, Karen (Brian) Barth of Newport and Denise (Dan) Lovelace of Virginia; stepson, Brian Loomis of Toledo; stepdaughter, Jenny Loomis of Corvallis; daughter-in-law, Danelle Peck of Newport; and 11 grandchildren. Dysle Irene L. Dysle, 96, of Toledo, Ore., died May 23, 2010 in Albany, Ore. She was born May 21, 1914 to John and "Lena" Fuegy in Hillsboro, Ore. After graduating from high school in Beaverton, Ore., she married her sweetheart, Alfred J. Dysle, on Feb. 15, 1934. She had many interests, such as bird watching, drawing, painting, reading, working crossword puzzles, baking her famous breads and blackberry pies, and playing the piano and organ. Next to her family, what she loved the most was making people laugh. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lena Fuegy; her husband, Alfred Dysle; four sisters; son-in-law, Lowell W. Coutant; grandson, Paul A. Dysle; granddaughter-in-law, Wendy Wilson Dysle; and nephew, John Badertscher. She is survived by daughter, Daryl Coutant of Ashland, Ore.; son, Clark (Betty) Dysle of Scio, Ore.; grandson, Grant Dysle (Julie) of Battle Ground, Wash.; two great-grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew.
