Keltner Beatrice (Bebe) I. Keltner, a resident of Lincoln City for the past 11 years, died at her home with her husband, Chuck, at her side, June 6, 2010, after a 3 1/2-year battle with colorectal cancer. She was 64. Bebe was born Dec. 9, 1945, in Portland to Mavis E. (Melvin) and Thomas P. Dwyer. She graduated from James Madison High School in Portland in 1963, receiving many honors and awards for her artwork. Together with her previous husband, Bebe had four children. First was her daughter, Ann, followed 15 months later by triplet boys: Daniel, Patrick and Timothy. Until moving to Lincoln City in 1999, Bebe lived her entire life in Portland. She worked early in her life at the Federal Reserve Bank, then spent the next 20 years working at various Portland-area restaurants as a waitress, bookkeeper and manager. While working at the Original Pantry restaurant she met her husband, Charles M. Keltner. They were married June 8, 1985, on Whidbey Island, Wash. and would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year. Bebe was a very creative and artistic person who loved to paint, draw and sketch. Her painted garden pots, landscapes and drawings of all types were a marvel and inspiration to her family and friends. She also loved her garden, with all its different and interesting flowers and plants, sewing, crafting, shopping, cooking, eating good food, and walking on the beach and in the Coast Range parks and forests. Bebe enjoyed traveling and had visited many different locales, including Europe, numerous trips to Las Vegas, Texas and California to visit family, and anywhere in the beautiful Northwest where there were mountains or water. She also enjoyed going for long drives anywhere with her husband that often ended up as overnight adventures. Bebe often commented to her family and friends that the last 10 years of her life living in Lincoln City had been the best years of her life. She was able to build her dream house at the beach together with her husband and start an early retirement. Also during this time she embarked on a new career that she truly loved as a Blackjack/multi-games dealer at Chinook Winds Casino Resort, where she worked for the last nine years until her illness forced her to quit. She was greatly loved and asked for by many customers. She also made many friends and had a huge extended family with countless numbers of her co-workers, whose love, friendship, generosity and compassion helped her immensely during her illness. Bebe loved her family and friends with all of her heart and loved to feed and entertain anyone who came to see her. She enjoyed creating special memories for others and celebrating birthdays and holidays. She was happiest spending time with her friends, children and, especially, her grandchildren. She showed great compassion and generosity to all. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Dwyer; her mother, Mavis Dwyer; and her son, Daniel Dodson. She is survived by her husband, Chuck Keltner of Lincoln City; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Ian Leitheiser of Portland; sons and daughters-in-law Timothy and Non Dodson of Portland and Patrick and Christina Dodson of Fort Worth, Texas; her five grandchildren Greta, Rae, Freyja, Hunter and Ti; and her beloved pets Francis Valentine and Tinker. Her warm smile and sharp wit, shared wisdom, caring words, generosity and love she showed for others will truly be missed. At Bebe's request, there will be no memorial service. Memorial donations can be made to Charles Keltner, 3233 N.W. Lee Ave., Lincoln City. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: marysday Surnames: Garner, Haroldson, Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oregon.counties.lincoln/5451.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The News Guard, Lincoln City, OR 97367 June 10, 2010 Patricia Garner Patricia Ann Garner died at her home in Lincoln City on June 7, 2010. She was 62. Pat was born Aug. 7, 1947, in Portland. She graduated from Madison High School in 1965. She completed her bachelor's of science degree at Portland State University on June 17, 1981, a degree she earned while working full time and going to night school. Pat brought two children into this world who she spoiled hopelessly but loved fiercely - daughter Elizabeth, the oldest, and her son, Garth, for both of whom, she would do anything. Pat had many friends she made wherever she was in life. She was no stranger to heartbreak and bitter struggles, but was always able to find something for which to be grateful, or something to laugh about. Her slow smile often lapsed into a hearty laugh that could melt ice, for she was simply not an ordinary woman, but a lioness with a heart of gold. Like a gentle, cooling breeze in summer, Pat was easy to love, and she truly loved her friends and family. Pat valued people from every walk of life and would give to others even if it meant she had to go without. She was the kindest, gentlest, most loving woman. She was easy to talk to and always made you feel better. She loved spending holidays with her family and friends. Her passions in life were planting flowers, reading books, watching movies with loved ones and discussing politics. Pat worked within the Multnomah County District and Circuit Court system from July 27, 1970, to March 31, 1988. She ended her career as a court operations manager. She was a valued and loyal employee. She was a personal friend to several judges, a host of attorneys, and to most, if not all, of her co-workers. Long after she'd left the court, Pat still counted among her closest circle of friends those she'd made while working within the Multnomah County district and circuit court systems. Pat worked at Allstate Insurance Company as an agent with her husband, Frank, from 1988 until she retired in 1996. She bought the beach house in 1991 and moved from Portland to Lincoln City in 1996. Pat's mother had a stroke and could have been put in a nursing home. Instead, Pat took her home and took care of her from 1987 until she died on Oct. 17, 1993. Mounting health problems and lingering injuries from past tragedies caused Pat a number of serious problems over the past few years, but she was not one to be counted out easily. In her last days, Pat was "taking care of business" and making final arrangements with her son and daughter, Garth and Elizabeth. She predicted her departure to her children, and two of her closest friends, Elaine Morris, with whom she'd been friends since the early 1970s and Pete Schoegje, who she had been friends with for more than 10 years of her life. Pat is survived by her two children, Elizabeth Haroldson and Garth Garner; and 4 grandchildren. Mikel, Chance, Desiree and Kyra. She was 87. Patricia was born Patricia Sue Durst to Thelma (Saling) and Rodney Durst in Portland on Nov. 3, 1922. Her parents divorced when she was a toddler and she went to live with her mother and maternal grandparents in Pendleton. When her mother died in a car wreck when "Patsy" was about 7, she continued to live with her grandparents and attended St. Joseph's Academy Catholic School. During her childhood and early teens in Pendleton, her colorful grandparents cared lovingly for Patsy and provided her with an interesting upbringing. Her grandfather, a former rodeo cowboy, created bathtub gin and her grandmother sold homemade potato chips door-to-door. Pat told stories of listening to partying cowboys downstairs in the Victorian house on Thompson Hill while lying in her feather bed, trying to keep warm in the unheated upstairs, and of painting "stockings" on her legs to go to school so the nuns wouldn't know she couldn't afford real ones. Her grandmother later bought a pool hall in Echo, where Patsy finished off the eighth grade. As a teenager, she moved to Portland to live with her father. They shared a small apartment on West Park Avenue. She attended Lincoln High School, graduating at age 16 in 1939. She then attended Northwestern Business College. She worked as a secretary for several years afterward. In 1943, she married Charles Schannep, the father of her only child, Mary. During their marriage, they ran a jewelry store in Gresham and she worked at Reynolds Metals Corp. They divorced in 1961. Her second husband was Carl Hanshew, an independent truck driver. Carl died in 1969. In 1970, she married Sam Danna, part owner of Garden Products. Sam's Sicilian father had a horse-drawn fruit and vegetable wagon. Sam carried on the Italian green grocer tradition by becoming a meat cutter, operating a small grocery store on S.E. 82nd Avenue, and later operating Garden Products. In 1975, Pat and Sam retired to Lincoln City, where they thoroughly enjoyed their oceanfront home at Roads End. Both were avid golfers, beachcombers, travelers and card players, especially bridge and cribbage. They were also active at St. Augustine Catholic Church. In 1990, they moved to a new home they had built in Indian Shores, where they made many good friends. Sam died in 1999 at the age of 83. She was desolate over his loss, but after a couple of years was consoled by one of Sam's golfing buddies, Don Fentress, who remained her helper, friend and companion until his death in July 2009. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Mary and Steve Heileson of Sherwood and grandsons Thomas (Karen) of Washington D.C. and Brian of Seattle. A memorial mass will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1139 U.S. Highway 101, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the church. There will be a private entombment at Portland Memorial Mausoleum. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. According to Oregon State Police (OSP), Dennis Keith Brockus, 45, was flying kites with his 45-year-old roommate at the end of Vista Street in Depoe Bay when his kite fell and got snagged on rocks. At about 6 p.m., Brockus' roommate broke his kite by crashing it into the ground and headed back to their shared house to carry out repairs. Meanwhile, OSP say, it appears Brockus went out on to the rocky outcropping to try and retrieve his own kite. His roommate returned to the scene and, finding no sign of his friend, called 911 at about 7:02 p.m.. The U.S. Coast Guard launched a HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Facility Newport and two 47-foot lifeboats from Station Depoe Bay. Depoe Bay Fire District (DBFR), Pacific West Ambulance and OSP all assisted with the search. At about 7:58 p.m. the Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted Brockus about two miles south of Vista Street, floating face-down about 50 to 100 yards from shore. The helicopter lowered a rescue swimmer to retrieve Brockus, who was unresponsive, and airlifted him to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital. According to DBFR, hospital staff tried to resuscitate Brockus for more than an hour before pronouncing him dead at 9:19 p.m. DBFR Lt. Dennis Knudson said Brockus and his roommate moved to Vista Street about a year ago, living just a couple of blocks from the scene of the accident. Knudson said people should be prepared to abandon personal belongings such as kites, cell phones or pieces of clothing rather than risk their lives to retrieve them. "These are just things," he said. "They can be replaced but your life can't be. Don't risk your life for a thing." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marysday Surnames: Watson, Hall, Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oregon.counties.lincoln/5459/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The News Guard, Lincoln City, OR 97367 June 16, 2010 PASTOR LEAVES PULPIT AFTER 35 YEARS WATSON LEAVES LEGACY OF UNITY AMONG CHURCHES If Pastor Ron Watson of the Lincoln City Evangelical Church has left a lasting impression on his congregation during his 35 years behind the pulpit, it's that those who pray together stay together - and not just within his church's boundaries. It's a message he has promoted throughout the area since arriving in town on Aug. 1, 1975. Perhaps more than any other pastor on the coast, Watson, 67, has championed the idea of worshipping as one. "I've purposely chosen to overlook each other's differences and to be loving together, and to do that was an unusual thing," said the retiring Watson, whose many years of service will be celebrated on Saturday, June 19, at his church at 4406 Highway 101. Rev. David "Marty" Hall from Park Place near Oregon City will be introduced as Watson's replacement at the reception, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Watson pioneered the idea of worshipping among churches and congregations that embrace theological differences during his time of service by beginning a ritual of celebrating with Agape Fellowship, a Pentecostal Charismatic Deliverance church located at 1089 S.W. 50th St. Beginning on Jan. 1, 2000, and extending through Pentecost in May 2005, the churches conducted combined services. "It was something unusual that hadn't happened in this community," Watson said. "We chose another church theologically different from us. It is my opinion that when churches split apart and there's dissension, that God is not pleased but Satan is. So we chose to get together instead of doing the opposite. We had services together every week for five and a half years. The churches worked together. It was really neat." Then there was the time on a Saturday night that Watson helped rally more than 1,000 people - primarily from Lincoln City but also from Tillamook, Newport and beyond - at the old Taft High (now Taft Elementary School) and got 200 decisions to accept Christ - mostly first-time commitments and some renewals. "Let's say God loves the Baptist people," he said. "So, if I'm to be like God, I'm going to love them, too. God loves other churches as well. If I compete against them and try to take away their people or try to hurt them in some way or try to look better than them or anything that competes with them, then that's going to displease God because He loves those people and, therefore, anything I can do to help or bless somebody that God loves and blesses, then I'm on God's side." Watson came to Lincoln City from the Western Evangelical Seminary in the Portland area with his wife, Linda. He quickly joined the Kiwanis Club, the Builders Club and the Key Club. He became a member of the North Lincoln Ministerial Association and Pastors Prayer, where pastors have met at Cannon Beach for four days in February for the past 20 years. He's also been involved in events such as Handel's Messiah, Mexicali missionary trips, Promise Keepers, Billy Graham's Portland Crusade, Jericho on the Coast, Luis Palau Crusade and Prayer Walks with the Cross, among others. Watson and wife Linda had two children when they arrived here - sons Eric, now 39, who works for Microsoft in the Redmond area, and Timothy, 37, who works on a Web page, green-energy project in Brooklyn. They had a daughter, Annaliese, now 35, shortly upon arrival. She is studying to become a midwife at Oregon State University. While all three children went through the Taft school system, Linda stayed involved with local kids in musicals, choirs and plays. Three churches were available to the Watsons when it came time for Ron to leave the seminary, but he was indecisive on which one to choose. "I knew I didn't know how to pick a church," he said. "All I knew is that I didn't care about the outside structure. They said, 'Where would you like to go?' I said, 'I don't know, you pick one."' With Linda's parents residing near Cloverdale, the Lincoln City option seemed most plausible. When health issues caused Linda to have to spend more time with her mother, now 96, at their farm near Mt. Hebo, the congregation of approximately 30 has allowed the Watsons to live nearly 30 miles away from the church for the past several years. Watson was influenced to become a pastor by his father-in-law, a pastor in Beaver who suggested he attend the Western Evangelical Seminary in Portland. "I had no clue what kind of seminary it was and this was one of the brands they had, one of the denominations," Watson said. "Linda's brother and wife went to be in the Portland area, so we went to an Evangelical church with them while I was in the seminary and it just naturally fell into place." Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Watson later moved to Pueblo, Colo., where he graduated from the University of Southern Colorado after spending five years in the Air Force. He was prevented from fulfilling his dream of becoming an astronaut due to high blood pressure. Once out of the military, he considered becoming a high school math teacher "but went into preaching instead of teaching." "It's just like in war time," he said, "where the Navy was off doing its thing and the Air Force was off doing its thing, and then you see how [then-General] Eisenhower got these different armies and navies [from different countries] working together on D-Day. They were effective because they worked together. That's what I see in the effectiveness of people loving each other and loving God together and worshipping together. It makes sense to me that if the churches are working together, they're going to be more effective." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
