He was born Dec. 8, 1943 to Valerie and Orville Hodgson in North Bend. He graduated from Taft High School in Lincoln City. He was in the Marines. He married Gail Fogarty Hodgson on June 3, 1972 in Lebanon. During his life, he worked as a welder, fabricator and a mechanic. He also built a crab picker that squeezed the meat from the last two tips from the crab legs. It created four jobs and made more profit for the fish plant where he worked. He was a member of the united brotherhood of the winos, dingbats and riff-raff affiliated with the Historic Barge Inn in Newport. He loved hunting, fishing, four-wheeling and woodworking. He was preceded in death by his parents, Valerie and Orville Hodgson; sister, Patsy "Pots" Bennet; and in-laws, Joe and Maxine Fogarty. He is survived by his wife, Gail Hodgson of Newport; children, Chad Johnston of Salem, and Cedar (Shelli) Johnston of Newport; sisters, Susie (Bruce) Kay of Newport, and Nancy; five grandchildren, Keeley, Tiana, Kelsey, Cole and Ryann; and many nieces and nephews. She was born Feb. 14, 1922 to Ernest Neubauer and Mildred Hill in Lorain, Ohio. She married her first husband, Gaza Papp, on June 7, 1943 in Covington, Ky. He shipped out to World War II on July 1, 1944 and was killed in France on Aug. 17, 1944. She remarried the following year in Woodsfield, Ohio to Harold L. Layfield. He died of heart disease in November of 1979. He was also a veteran of World War II. They had two boys, William (Bill) Henry Layfield, born in November 1945 and Harold Allen Layfield born in September 1956. She owned a restaurant and gas station, and later worked for Ocean Spray Housing Authority doing clerical work. She belonged to a tri-chem club. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidering, quilting, reading, watching TV and working crossword puzzles. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Neubauer and Mildred Hill; her first husband, Gaza Papp; and her second husband, Harold Layfield. She is survived by her children, Bill (Sandy) Layfield of Everton, Ark., and Harold (Nadine) Layfield of Newport; five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was born May 2, 1941 to John Aulden and Leta Lorita (North) Finch in Mangum, Okla. He was one of three children. He graduated from Siletz High School in Siletz, and then served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1962. He was married to Gloria Ricker from 1964 until 1981. He moved to St. Helens in 1968 and worked for Boise Cascade until 1981, when he retired. He loved the outdoors, deer hunting, coastal fishing and gardening of strawberries and tomatoes. While at the Avamere living facility in St. Helens, the staff turned over the flower garden to Teddy, as he took such pride and care of the gardens. He is survived by his children, Sonya Finch, Teddy (Kris) Finch and Angela Finch; siblings, John Lee Finch and Joan Bowman; and six grandchildren, Billy Earlywine, Cody, Dawn, Kayla, Jesse and Alden Finch. She married Robert Parker on Aug. 12, 1963 in Santa Clara, Calif. She worked as a caregiver in a nursing home and as an in-home caregiver for over five-and-a-half years. She also worked in the office at the California Highway Patrol for many years. She loved gardening, letter writing, and her private Bible study time. She was a member of the Ustick Baptist Church in Meridian, Idaho. She was devoted to her lord and savior, Jesus, and treasured her family and friends. She was born and raised in Oregon and then graduated from Brigham Young University, where she met her future husband, Ben. They moved to Fairfield, Calif. five years ago for Ben to pursue his career as a librarian at the CSU Maritime Academy in Vallejo. She loved her work as an elementary school teacher in Utah. She also worked as a high school registrar and as an administrative assistant in the Vallejo Unified School District Offices. She most recently taught ESL and Spanish to adults in Vallejo. She was a woman of strong faith and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in the children's group, singing in choir, and reading scriptures in both English and Spanish. She loved teaching others how to read and discover the joy found in books. She was able to meet many milestones in life despite her serious illness. She believed in actively making memories with her family right up until the end. She is survived by her husband, Benjamin; sons, Gabriel and Gideon; parents, Bob and Elaine Peterson of Newport, Ore.; brothers, Erick (Sheryl) Peterson and Kevin Peterson; sisters, Laura (Justin) Gearing and Crystal Peterson; her grandparents; and nine nieces and nephews. She wished to develop and donate a Family Support Collection at the Cal Maritime Library, where children can learn about what is taught at the academy and the careers their parents are pursuing. This collection would include materials to help spouses and children deal with parents being deployed for periods of time. He was born Nov. 11, 1935 to Harold and Evelyn Tollett in Salinas, Calif. He honorably served the United States for five years in the U.S. Navy, obtaining the rank of EM3. His dream of retiring from the military was cut short when he sustained an injury to his back. He later worked at his lifelong love of gunsmithing and also worked as a flagger. He was a lifelong Catholic. In 1956, he married Gladys L. Shoop in Kelso, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Evelyn Tollett. He retired from Rice Growers Cooperative and moved to Newport in 1995. He was a life member of the Moose Lodge and American Legion. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying. She was born in Berlin, N.D. Her family moved to Rush City, Minn. when she was 14, and she went to North Branch High School. In 1940, she married Ken E. Robinson. They had two sons, Richard and Larry. A few years later, they moved to Oregon and lived in Salem, where she ran her own beauty shop. In 1980, they moved to Toledo, and after her husband died, she moved to Newport. She was an active member of Salem Eagles, Toledo Elks, Lady Elks, RV Club, Red Hat Ladies, and more. Well into her 80s, she worked as a home companion through Samaritan Hospital, driving ladies around who were 20 years younger than herself. She also worked at Walmart as a greeter. She loved living in Newport and was always cheerful and happy. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ken Robinson; children, Richard and Larry; three brothers and one sister. She is survived by grandchildren, Rick Coplin of Alaska; Tony and Jeremy Robinson of California, Amanda Stipe of California and Cole Robinson of Ashland; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was born Nov. 22, 1936 as Beverly Walters in Culver City, Calif. She was a well-known legal secretary in Orange County, Calif. and Tigard, Ore. She was a partner in multiple real estate investments for more than 40 years. She and Mike Gold were married in 1973 in Los Angeles. In 1984, they moved to Hawaii, where they resided until 1989. In 1990, the couple moved to Newport and purchased Hayden Motor Company from Ray Hayden. The dealership is now known as Gold Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac, of which she was extremely proud. She and Mike enjoyed spending time at their condo in Palm Springs. She was an avid golfer like her husband. She was always a strong supporter of the community she loved. Whether it was through community service, support of the schools where her grandchildren attended, or giving assistance to a neighbor, Beverly always generously gave her support. She is survived by husband, Michael Gold of Newport; daughter, Tonya Joens of Prineville; brother, Jack Walters of Utah; sister, Sharon Carlton of California; five stepchildren, 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Swinney Norman L. Swinney, 80, of Lincoln City, Ore., died Sept. 11, 2010 at his home. He was born Dec. 29, 1929 in Red Bluff, Calif. He worked 30 years for ONC Freight Lines and seven years for School District 9 in Coos Bay. He is survived by his wife, Jane Swinney; five children, four stepchildren and many grandchildren. He was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses, and a memorial will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Kingdom Hall in Lincoln City, located at 3794 SE High School Dr. Affordable Burial and Cremation in Lincoln City is handling arrangements. He was born July 16, 1925 to E.W. Thurman and Mary Hensley Thurman in Mill Springs, Mo. He joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 17. He learned construction skills while in Guam. He returned stateside to marry Alice Allen Rogers and begin a successful roofing contractor business and to raise three sons. He was forced to retire early due to a life-altering motorcycle accident, which resulted in a permanent head injury and only partial use of his left arm. Following the accident, he later returned to college as well as roofing. He moved to Oregon, where he proudly overcame an alcohol addiction and discovered, to his liking, Gold Beach. While living in Gold Beach, he enjoyed being "Santa" at the former Spada's restaurant. Failing health in 1999 forced him to relocate to Newberg to be near his son, Tim. At age 82, he moved to Newport to live with his son, Tom, and ultimately to receive care at Avamere Rehabilitation. He liked boxing, having been a contender in his weight division for the Merchant Fleet of the Pacific. He enjoyed playing the harmonica, checkers, reading, writing, classical music and the Beatles. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a twinkle in his blue eyes, and a deep love for his sons, Tim, Tom, and Allan. He leaves behind three grandchildren, Corey, Zachary, Nickolas, and two great grandchildren. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport is handling arrangements. He was born Aug. 25, 1918 to Jerett V. Brown and Alta M. (Cox) Brown in Marysville, Kan. As a young man, he came from Kansas to Tacoma, Wash., where he worked at McChord Air Force Base and later became an airbus captain in the fire department on the base. He met and married Willie in 1939. They moved to Richland in 1947, where he was a member of Richland's first fire department. After a serious injury at a fire, he retired as a lieutenant in the Richland Fire Dept after 28 years of service. He was a past president of Sagebrush Cyclers Motorcycle Club, Gold Prospector's Association and Retired Firefighters of Washington. His hobbies and interests included anything with a motor and wheels; cars and motorcycles mainly, but he also liked fishing and football. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerett and Alta Brown, and four siblings. He is survived by his wife Llewellyn "Willie" Harris Brown; daughter, Dianne (Paul) and son, Dan (Debra); brother, Jerett V. Brown Jr; and sisters, Gloria Adams, Carmen Pennington and Rose Leith; grandson, Cory (Melina); granddaughters Sarah (Takashi) and Jessica; great-grandchild, Cayden; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be announced at a later date in Richland, Wash. Memorial donations may be made to the Fireman's Fund or Alzheimer's Disease Association. She married Edwin Randall on June 29, 1957 in Nampa, Idaho. She was a member of the Ustick Baptist Church in Idaho. She loved gardening and cross-stitching, and she was a faithful daily Bayfront walker. She was preceded in death by her mother, Beulah M. Smith, and father, Burl Hooten. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Edwin "Ed" Randall of Newport; children, Tim (Gretchen) Randall of Newport, Gina Randall of Redmond, Sheila (Michael) Barlow of Maui, Hawaii and Heather (Wylde) Gillen of Newport; grandchildren, Alicia Rowlee, Malina Barlow, Mason Barlow and Corey Gillen; and great-grandchild, Macie Barlow.
