Sproul, 77, of Waldport, Ore., died from complications following a brain tumor operation on Sept. 26, 2010. He was born June 4, 1933 to Catherine (Foye) and Herbert Sproul in New York, N.Y. He spent a happy childhood with siblings, Barbara, Virginia and Obby in the tree-lined streets of Ridgewood, N.J. As a child, wearing a fedora no less, he liked visiting his grandma at her high-rise in Washington Heights. Summers were spent on the beaches of Cape Cod. He excelled at math and played for the tennis team at Ridgewood High School. He worked delivering the bulky Sunday New York Times, besides slicing lemons for soirees at the country club. He graduated from New York Maritime College with a Bachelor of Science, Engineering degree, afterward sailing the seas as an engineering officer employed by private and government entities. He also served proudly on the Pacific Ocean as a lieutenant (j.g.) in the U.S. Navy. His favorite pastimes included carpentry, where he remodeled and built several homes and great fences. He won prizes for dahlia growing and photography, loved music, Oregon's forests and the beauty of New Zealand. One of his life's highlights was his organizing of a camping trip from Cape Cod to Carmel Valley, with his wife, four sons, a map, station wagon, tent and a Siamese cat. On his days off, he volunteered gladly, helping build the original Samaritan House in Newport and for 15 years worked beside his wife, Lynette, and friend, Ed, in the gardens of a Newport church. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. As the years waned, he relished his beach walks, the Red Sox, Ducks and Beavs; reading about Mt. Everest, political news on CNN and football. Cherished greatly were the hours spent supporting the Newport Cubs at his grandson's sporting events, just as he had supported his sons' games at NHS years before. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lynette Sproul; sons, Rich (Patty), Matt, Dan (Susie), Tim (Angie); and grandchildren, Whitney and Wade. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 927 N. Bowers III, 64, of Florence, Ore., died of cancer on Sept. 12, 2010. He was born Feb. 22, 1946. He came to Oregon from the East Coast in the late '60s driving a VW microbus, and he settled with family and friends in Eugene, where he was a dedicated founder and member of the Eugene Growers Market. A trip to the coast convinced him to stay where the forest meets the ocean, and he managed Gull Haven Lodge for a short period. Not long after, Jim settled in Yachats, where he resided for more than 30 years. During his time in Lincoln County he worked for the Lincoln County School District, the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. He volunteered for an array of wildlife projects under the auspices of just about every state, federal and nonprofit program in the area. In later years, he started his own business, taking visitors to the Yachats area on guided nature walks. He was well versed in botany, zoology, geology and physics and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with everyone. He is survived by his wife, Jessica; daughters, Catlin and Gwen; sister, Jane of Eugene; brother, Pete of South Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held in Yachats on Feb. 22, 2011. The location will be announced at a later date. Burns's Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home in Florence is handling arrangements.
