He was born July 9, 1922 to Earl and Leota Boggs in Eugene, Ore. He was raised by several different people who helped him become successful in his life. He graduated from Molalla High School in 1940 and then received an athletic scholarship to Willamette University. During his freshman year the football team was in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The football team was recruited to perform guard duty and returned home on a hospital ship where the team helped care for the wounded. When he got home, he joined the Navy and served for the duration of World War II. During this time he met the love of his life Constance Bodeker at Molalla High School, when he was on leave and she was teaching. They were married July 27, 1944, in San Diego. After the war, he returned to Willamette, where he earned his bachelor degree of science in education. He earned his master's degree from the University of Oregon and then his doctorate degree from Oregon State University. Earl began his teaching career in Pendleton and then came to Salem, where he was assistant principal and then principal at Leslie Junior High School. He was the principal when Judson Junior High School opened in 1958. His favorite colors were purple and white, which became Judson's school colors and remain to this day. He then was assistant superintendent for Salem-Keizer School District. He then moved to Lincoln County and was superintendent there until his retirement in 1981. After his retirement he was interim superintendent for Redmond School District. Connie and Earl retired to the home they built on the Little North Fork of the Santiam River and enjoyed the years they lived there. He loved to fish Oregon's rivers and streams and he loved digging for clams. They made many trips around the world and especially enjoyed their time in Australia. Earl loved sports. During the 1940s, he played semi-pro baseball around the Northwest. He felt that sports kept him focused and out of trouble, which enabled him to go onto college. He enjoyed watching football and baseball and until the day he died was a diehard OSU Beaver fan. He was preceded in death by his wife Connie. He is survived by his four children, Doug (Candi), Margo, David (Mary Jo), and Shelley Paeth (John); six grandchildren, Casey Hampton, Joseph Hampton (Melanie) and Matthew Hampton (Holly), Daniel Paeth, Sarah Paeth and Molly Paeth; and one great-grandchild Connor Hampton. She was born June 20, 1929 in Rogue River, Ore. She was the third of five children born to John Clarence and Mary Verina (Standage) Strode. Dorothy grew up in little communities in Oregon, Washington and California. She attended school in Siletz and graduated in Linwood, Calif. Later she attended the local community college, which she was very proud of. At 17, Dorothy was married to Bartley Demoia Eatherly in Reno, Nev. They were married for 26 years and had three children together, Wayne, Larry and Darlene. She worked at Ohrback's Department Store in La Mirada, Calif. and worked for a short time at the state mental hospital in San Francisco. She lived in many places in her lifetime but she always called Siletz "home." In February 1971, Dorothy married the love of her life, Ernie Chandler. Her adventurous spirit led her to Maine, Alaska, the Dakotas, Hawaii, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. Many trips to Salem were also necessary because that was the closest place to buy See's Candy. She still had a few things to cross off her "bucket-list" like sky diving and zip-lining. She was known as a Mom, Grama Grape, Dorothy, sister, aunt and friend. Her enduring wisdom, kindness, patience and strength will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie Chandler; sisters, Mary Bernice Faulkner and Betty Faughn Preisz; and grandson, Chuckie Trantham. He was born Dec. 31, 1922 to Elmer McDonald and Gladys Hanks McDonald in Shawnee, Okla. The family moved to a farm near Glendale, Ariz. in September 1924. His siblings include Roberta, Lowell, Norma and Carolyn. Stan graduated from Glendale High School in 1940, where he had been a star football player. He received a football scholarship from the University of Arizona. He soon joined the Coast Guard, but was only in for a short time, as the government released him to go back to farming. A short while later, he joined the Army Air Force, where he was a gunner/instructor on B-29 Bombers. Their squadron was halfway to Japan when the pilot announced that the war was over and that they were going home. They made a U-turn in the middle of the Pacific and headed back to the states. Upon returning home to Glendale, Stan went into the family farming business - McDonald Vegetable Co. In 1950, he married long-time friend Gwen Crouch, whom he had known his entire life. In 1952, they had their first-born, Robert Stanley, and in 1954 they had their daughter, Janet Elizabeth. While living in the "valley," Stan did farming, and was the owner/operator of the first ski shop in Arizona. In 1963, the family moved up to the White Mountains, where he did many things - was a pilot, designed a ski run, was a ski instructor, managed a country club, worked at SW Industries, was a general contractor, was the owner/operator of Tal-Wi-Wi Lodge and owned a ranch. He was always very active, and during his life, he enjoyed skiing, horseback riding and hunting. Stan was also an avid reader, which in later years, he did many hours during the day. In the late '70s, Stan and Gwen moved back down to Phoenix and Stan went to work for the State of Arizona, and later the City of Phoenix. He started the Mounted Ranger program, where the city park rangers rode horseback through the desert/mountain parks. Stan retired from the City of Phoenix in the early '90s, and in 1992, Stan and Gwen moved to Newport in order to be near their daughter and grandchildren. Stan just couldn't keep from working, so he got a job at Fred Meyer, where he worked for several more years before his final retirement. In 2000, just a few months short of 50 years, Gwen passed away. Stan had been going to exercise class for several years by then, which is where he met Grace Strom, whom he married in 2002. They lived in Depoe Bay until 2008, when they moved into Newport. Since Stan had been on dialysis for several years, he and Gracie played a major role in getting the dialysis clinic built in Newport. They had several wonderful years together. She was born Aug. 5, 1918 to Marguerite (Painter) and Edward Heald in Billings, Mont. Evelyn spent an idyllic childhood with sisters Marguerite and Julia on Trail Creek Ranch in Cody, Wyo. After graduating from Montana State University with a B.A. in English literature, she married David Bostwick in 1943. Their son, David, was born in 1951. After earning his doctorate, the family moved to Corvallis, where David was employed as a professor of geology at Oregon State University. Daughter Julia was born in 1954. As her family grew older, Evelyn went back to work in what turned out to be the "perfect job," serving for many years as the slide librarian for OSU's art department. She found the work and people stimulating and well matched with her interest in the fine and literary arts. It was a source of great pride and pleasure to her to buy her own house. Although Evelyn and David were divorced, they remained friends until he died. She married John Henry Rock in 1977, and they began a collaboration on expanding the garden that would be her passion and comfort in difficult times. Her son, David, died in a sailing accident in 1980, and John died in 1993. She continued living independently in her own home until she was 90, working in her garden with daughter Julia's help. As her health declined, she moved to Oceanview Senior Living in Newport to be closer to family. Evelyn was an early member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Corvallis. She was an early feminist and staunch democrat. She was a poet and an avid reader, a birdwatcher and lover of the natural world. Family and friends will cherish memories of her charm and wit, her kindness and independent spirit and a house filled with flowers.
