This evidently ws the first graveyard at Waldport, on the hillside facing the bay and ocean. Elva Doty Galloway believed it to be an Indian burial ground. Later she learned that her grandmother and great grandfather were among the pioneer graves. Fire swept the hill after this, destroying wooden markers and fences. Highway 101 was cut through, some graves were removed and some were not. Harmon is listed in this cemetery with dates of 1838-1903. >From a note about "Yaquina Cemetery" in "At Rest In Lincoln County", there is a reference that South Beach and Newport Cemeteries were used but does not say when or why. It also states that there are few stones in the Yaquina cemetery and only a couple have been read and recorded. (Note: It appears there is a difference between the Yaquina Cemetery and the Yaquina John Point Cemetery as the book has listings for each and many at John Point and only 4 or so at Yaquina.) If Harmon Buoy had been removed before 1978, when the "At Rest In Lincoln County" was compiled, he was the only Bouy in the book and was located in the Yaquina John Point Cemetery. This listing was given to Evelyn Parry of the Lincoln County Historical Society by Florence Hallowell some years before the book was published so it is possible he was moved. However, he should have been picked up in the reading of the other cemeteries and apparently was not. Contacting Bateman Funeral Home may shed some light on the matter. Their address is: Bateman Funeral Home, 915 NE Yaquina Height Dr., Newport, OR 97365 --phone 541-265-5584. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Have you tried contacting the state cemetery board? If memory serves, the state issues a permit for each burial, so it stands to reason that the state would also issue a permit to move a grave.
