He grew up in Dearborn where his father was a grounds keeper for Henry Ford. He joined the infantry of the Army during World Was II and served in the signal corps stationed on Hawaii. During Al's time in the Army, he received a field commission to second lieutenant. Following his military time, Al worked for the National Guard, opened his own construction company, and managed Camp Oakes near Big Bear Lakes, California. He married Janet Reid and together they raised two children, Tom and Betsy. Al completed his Bachelor's degree in outdoor education at the age of 56. Al and his family moved to Stevenson, Washington in 1979 when Al started working for Columbia River Girl Scouts and managing Camp Arrowhead. He retired from Columbia River Girl Scouts in 1996 as the property manager overseeing all of their properties. Al married the love of his life, Sharon "Fanny" Drews in 1996 and moved to be with her in Newport, Oregon. For the past eighteen years he took pleasure in wood working, maintaining his home and supporting Fanny in her teaching career. Al will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, including horseback riding and fishing. Al also loved to read about history, drink wine, and spend quiet evenings with Fanny. He is survived by his partner and loving wife of 18 years Sharon "Fanny" Drews, his brother Bob, his son Tom, Ann his wife, and their children Michelle, Megan, and Tim, and his daughter Betsy Mullenix and her husband, John Sheppard. Al is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Milda. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 13, 2:00pm at the Bateman Funeral Home Chapel. He was a resident of Newport since 1984. Bob was a Journey Lineman for 40 years. He worked at Central Lincoln PUD and retired from Peninsula Light in Gig Harbor. Bob's time revolved around his three sons. He enjoyed riding his Harleys, loving his dogs and umpiring baseball. Bob often told people, "I love baseball so much that I got involved in umpiring because it is the best seat in the house." Bob was also a sportsman and he was not only a duck fan, but a fanatic. Family members include his late wife Sandra of Newport, his son Bobby of Newport, and two sons Sean and Joey of Gig Harbor. He had two sisters, Ruth Anne Gudger of Eugene and Rachel Queenin of Petaluma. Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday, April 12 at 1:00 pm. With a celebration of life party to follow at the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club. To celebrate Bob's passion for his U of O Ducks join us in wearing green and yellow. She is survived by her three sons Robert and Laurie Van Tassel of Victoria, B.C. and their three daughters Heather, Camille, and Allison; Michael Van Tassel of Ann Arbor, MI, and Jeff Van Tassel, Erica, and their son Trevor of Long Beach, CA. She was sadly preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Kathy Moore, who died September 4, 2009, and she is also survived by Kathy's children Louis and Kayla. Merina was born October 25, 1935 in Grosse Point, MI where she spent her childhood. She received her baccalaureate at the University of Michigan in 1957 and in 1973 went to Eastern Michigan University for her Master of Arts in Educational Psychology. She later returned to the University of Michigan where she received an advanced degree in the Combined Program of Education and Psychology. Merina spent her early career working in the Michigan schools as a psychologist. In 1981 she moved to California with her daughter, Kathy, and was the district's psychologist for several years. She moved to the central Oregon coast in 1990 after retiring where she lived and wrote poetry for 20 years. In 1998, she wrote a book, an autoethnography of healing during her first experience with cancer. In 2007, she moved to Sedona because of her love of the red rocks and the inherent beauty of northern Arizona. Merina had a fierce love of books, music, literature, film, the arts, and the natural world, particularly water and trees. Throughout her lifetime, she maintained an abiding love for animals, with especial gratitude for her beloved horse and the dogs of her youth. Merina was, and will always be, a beautiful woman inside and out who is loved deeply and will be remembered by many. Memorial contributions can be made to the MISS Foundation, an international organization that aids grieving parents, in honor of her and her daughter Kathy Moore, 77 E Thomas Rd, Ste 112, Phoenix, Az 85012. Wes was born May 11th, 1951 in Scotch Plains, New Jersey to Hull and Dora Wickham. Early on he developed a love for planes and boats. He graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in 1969, then soon after got in his car and headed West, not stopping until his tires got wet in the Pacific Ocean. Over the years Wes worked on, owned, and captained many fishing boats in Oregon, Alaska, and most recently he captained a tuna fishing boat in the South Pacific. He was a generous man, with amazing wit, whose many friends around the world feel his loss. He is survived by his daughter Lindsey Sutherland, brother Spencer Wickham, and mother Dora Wickham. He was preceded in death by his father Hull Wickham and his wife Pamela Harvey. A private gathering took place following his death, returning Wes back to his beloved Pacific Ocean. She taught kindergarten in the Corvallis School District for 28 years. Having a naturally gentle soul, she loved children and was a favorite of her pupils. She loved flowers and gardening and was known for her ever-present smile. Jean married Carl Powers in Corvallis, OR on June 3, 1953; they were married 56 years. From 1985 to 2005 they lived in Tidewater, OR, where they attended the Waldport Baptist Church. Due to failing health they moved to Longview, WA to be near their daughter. After the passing of her husband, Carl, Jean lived the past 2.5 years under the gentle care of the Walker House Adult Family Home in Longview, WA. Helen was born on March 15, 1920 in Deer Lodge, Montana. She was one of four children born to Glenn and Mary (Driscoll) Foley. She met her future husband, Donald H. Gilbert S. Upon retirement in 1982, they moved to Beaverton and then to Hillsboro, where they both lived in their own home until their deaths. Helen worked as a secretary for the Westinghouse Corporation in Sunnyvale, CA. When the family moved to Newport, OR, Helen worked for the City of Newport as a chamber member and eventually was Assistant Deputy Assessor for Lincoln County. She enjoyed traveling, shopping with her girlfriends, and was a devoted dog lover. She was always there for her grandchildren and would insist on having holidays at her home so her family could gather. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Don Sr., a son, Lloyd , and three siblings. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald Jr. and Kathryne Gilbert of Hillsboro, OR; a grandson and his wife, Dylan and Becky Gilbert of Federal Way, WA; two step grandchildren, Steven and Brent Walton; four great grandchildren, Sean, Jack, Piper, and Molly; and a sister-in-law, Marie Gilbert of Deer Lodge, MT. His mother was an Oneida of Wisconsin Indian and his father a professional musician who traveled frequently. Other than a few short periods of time he was raised on the Iler family farm 14 miles north of Pipestone, by his grandmother, Bertha Iler, uncle and aunt, Ronald and Eloise Iler, and was raised as one of the family along with his cousins. He graduated from nearby Verdi High School in 1952. In 1953 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and after basic training and radio operator school served in Korea until 1955 when he received an honorable discharge with the rank of staff sergeant. After a short visit home he moved to El Monte in Southern California, where he met and married his wife of 58 years, Ileta Elaine Downing Iler. At the time both were working for Bank of America at the El Monte branch. During most of the 19 years in So. California he worked in the supermarket industry, and after 7 years was promoted to store manager and spent 10 years in that position. During that period of time he attended night school for 9 years and in 1974 received his BA degree from Cal-State University, Long Beach. Later in 1974 the family moved to Reno, Nevada where he was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company as an agent. After two vacation trips to Southeast Alaska in 1985 and 1986 Hal and Ileta decided they would like to live in Juneau to enjoy the beauty, the wildlife, and of course, the fishing. In early 1987 they moved to Juneau where he continued his career with Prudential. Both he and Ileta enjoyed fishing for salmon and halibut on their boat while living there. He was a member of Rotary, the American Legion, and a life member of the Mt. Juneau-Gastineaux Masonic Lodge in Juneau. After both Hal and Ileta retired they decided to move back to Oregon where Ileta was born and raised. March of 2005 they moved to the Oregon coast where they have continued their retirement. Harold is survived by his wife, Ileta, son, David Iler, and daughter, Kathleen Galau as well as grandson, Patrick Iler, granddaughter, Ileta Galau, and great-grandsons Patrick Douglas Iler, and Oliver Tonsgard. Funeral services will be at 10 A.M. Sunday, April 14, 2013 at the Bateman Funeral Home Chapel with visitation beginning one hour prior to service. Bateman Funeral Home is caring for the family. Dick was born in 1937 in Albany, residing there until retirement and moving to Newport in 1997. He attended St. Mary's School, Albany High School, and Oregon State University. He graduated at the top of his law school class at Willamette University College of Law in 1962. As a member of the Oregon State Bar, he served as the Chairman of the Worker's Compensation Section of the Bar, authored articles to the Bar Journal, wrote chapters in the Continuing Legal Education manuals, and served on numerous committees and work groups. Ultimately, Oregon Lawyers elected Dick to the Board of Bar Governors and in 1988, he was elected Vice-President of the Oregon State Bar Association. Dick Kropp was a lawyer's lawyer. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Exalted Ruler and Trustee of BPOE 359, and an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Harrison Kropp; mother, Alice (Silk) Kropp-Westbrook; children, Leslie Cheney and Laurie Geissler of Albany, and Brenda Lindsay of Forest Grove; sister, JoEllen Hromas; and grandchildren, Emily Cheney, Megan and Katelyn Geissler, and Ian, Rileyanne, and Hannah Lindsay. Dick was preceded in death by his father, Herman (Monte) Kropp. A funeral mass is scheduled for 10:00am, Saturday, April 13th at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany. Jim dedicated his life to being husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, son, brother and friend. But most of all, he lived his life serving the Lord! Born on March 10th, 1945 in Oakland, California to Vern and Marie Gamb, he was the youngest of five. Jim gradated in Rancho Cordova, went to college and joined the Army in 1966. While in the military, he went to Germany where his twin sons Jerry and Craig were born. Six years later March 17th, 1973, St Patrick's day (Luck of the Irish), God gave him Pamela Smirl Gamb his best friend, soul mate and partner in God's work for 40 years! She became a mother to his son's, 6 years of age, who she thanks God for daily and cherishes this precious gift. Jim's life was filled with so much love and many rich blessings of helping others and working with kids of all ages. He worked at The Children's Farm Home and Safeway as an accountant. He retired from Santiam Christian School as their Business Administrator of Finance. Jim and wife Pam were a team in everything they did, whether it was teaching Sunday school, leading the little children's choir, singing in the adult choir at church, foster parenting for 14 years, also Steven Ministers for the Steven Ministry program. Jim was very instrumental in getting the food pantry started in Newport. This was a very special part of his heart. Jim has been described by his friends and family as "being full of life, spirit, very loyal, full of love, laughter, and vitality. It was his joy of living and his positive outlook that carried him through the challenges of his illness. Jim leaves his wife Pamela Gamb, twin sons Jerry & Craig Gamb, daughter in- laws Kathy and Patty Gamb, grand children Nick, Tyler, Aaron and Ryan. Great-granddaughter Monique, Brother Kenneth Gamb and sister in-law Barbara Gamb. Sisters Alfreda Gamb Burns Bellis, Elisabeth Gamb Wright, Verna Gamb Chacon (deceased) and brother in-law Don Chacon. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, April 20th 2:00 pm at South Beach Church in Newport, Oregon where Jim and wife lived for the past 20 years. "Bill" was born on June 4, 1943 in Everett, Washington to William Willis Watson, Sr. and Madelon Lucille Burke Watson. They moved to Taft, Oregon, where Bill attended Taft High School. During his work life Bill worked as a car salesman and an antique auto restorer. Bill was married and divorced and has several children and grandchildren who he lost contact with throughout the years. Bill was pre-deceased by his parents and his sister, Nelia Walker. He is survived by his sister Wilda Watson of Lincoln City, Oregon; his children; grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and friends. Bill remained in contact with Taft High School classmates until his death. Bill's friends Leonard and Eunice were an ongoing support for him since his admission to Assisted Living facilities in 2001. Bill was persistent and adamant in his will to live throughout his illness. No services were held for him at his request. Any remembrances can be made to Adventist Health/Hospice, Portland, Oregon. Cullison A Celebration of Life service will be held May 11 at the Elks Park in Lincoln City for Karen M. Cullison of Eugene who died February 12, 2013. She was 59. She was born February 17, 1953 in Tillamook, Oregon, to parents Ray and Thelma Gardner. She worked at the Market of Choice Company for 20 years. She graduated Taft High School in 1971. She attended college at Linn Benton. Survivors include her mother Thelma Gardner; soulmate Mike Hull; sister Gayle Gardner-Williver and brother-in-law Phil; brother Leslie Gardner and sister-in-law Gay Lynn; niece Lena Gardner (fiancé,Thomas Gibson) and great-nephews, Ray and Thomas. Her father, Ray, died earlier. Karen was loved much and will be missed greatly by all. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local charity or Karen's favorite-your local food bank. He is survived by his wife Willetta of 61 years; three sons, Timothy Neal of Escondito, Calif., Tary Ben of Swan Lake, Montana, Todd Edward of Otis, Ore.; and one daughter, Tracy Kolar of Terrebonne, Ore; two sisters, Ida Williams of Newberg, Ore., and Erba Drain of Eureka, Calif.; and one brother, Verl Middlesworth of McMinnville, Ore.; eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Howard was born in Scotts Mill, Ore. December 1923 to Fredd and Eldore Middlesworth. When Howard was 4 years old, the family moved to the Otis area. He served in the armed forces during the war years of 1941 to 1945, where he learned to be a catskinner and helped build a lot of the logging roads in and around the Otis, Rose Lodge and Lincoln City areas. The last two years before he retired, he was a commercial fisherman with two of his sons Tary and Todd in Kodiak, Alaska. The last four or five years, he and his wife, Willetta, lived off and on in Terrebonne, Ore., and Lincoln City, Ore. Services will be held at Otis Fire Hall in Otis, Ore., on March 9, 2013, at 1 p.m. followed by a potluck gathering after the services.
