Author: marysday Surnames: Shipley, Johnson, Mueller, Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oregon.counties.lincoln/6511/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The News Guard, Lincoln City, OR June 24, 2013 Laurie Anne Johnson Shipley Laurie Anne (Johnson) Shipley died at home on June 8, 2013 in Lincoln City, Oregon, while in hospice care. She had struggled for ten months with adenocarcinoma of the pancreas which was inoperable when discovered. She was buried June 15th with a small family gathering at graveside in Ashland, OR on June 15, 2013. Born June 8, 1937, she was the daughter of William H. Johnson and Ella G. Johnson, residents of Minot at that time. "Bill" Johnson was then managing editor of the Minot Daily News and Ella taught elementary School and was a principal at Lincoln School. Laurie's older brother, William R. Johnson died in 1989; she is survived by John M. Johnson of Oregon City, OR, Nancy J. Mueller of Falls Church, Virginia, her husband, Glen S. Shipley of Lincoln City OR, and sons Matthew J. Shipley of Medford, OR and Glen C. Shipley, of Beaverton, OR. Laurie had interests in music and was an apt student, graduating as valedictorian from Minot Model High School in 1955. She inherited an avid interest in politics, devouring news in whatever form was presented. She chose medical technology as an occupation and left Minot in 1957 after attending Minot State Teacher's College to study in Portland Oregon. While in training at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Oregon she met her future husband, Glen, who was a medical student working part time at that hospital. They worked together for two years before Glen saw the light and asked her to be his wife. She offered no opposition to the proposal and they were married at Mt. Scott Park Presbyterian Church on June 14, 1959, two days after he graduated from Oregon Health Sciences University. Laurie was employed as a medical technologist during the early years of her marriage, but her employment was interrupted by Glen's assignments in various hospitals as an intern and resident. . After Glen completed training they lived in Denver, CO, and moved to Ashland, OR, in 1973. While there, Laurie completed her college education and obtained a bachelor's degree at Southern Oregon University. She was active in local politics in Ashland, campaigning for various office seekers, was a volunteer for "Meals on Wheels", played golf with a lady's group, was a member of "National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI)" of Southern Oregon. Laurie and Glen chose to retire in Lincoln City, Oregon in 1998. They discovered travel after a trip to Malaysia where their son, Glen Curtis, was married. Thereafter they traveled extensively to many countries in Europe, India, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Their favorite place to vacation, however, remained in the US. A yearly camping trip in Glacier National Park became mandatory. Last visit was to Lake Kintla, in northern Glacier National Park, in August of 2012. The family requests donations be made to "Pan Can," an organization supporting research on pancreatic cancer. The internet address is: http://www.pancan.org/section_donate/donate_now.php#. As a technical representative, he sold a variety of chemicals and resins to many different industries throughout the country. In 1977 he was promoted to Area Sales Manager with oil field and gas treating chemicals his specialty. After training in New York City he was transferred to Chicago, Illinois where he met his future wife, Jan Carolyn Cook. They were married October 4, 1958 in Chicago, and became the parents of Nancy Carolyn and John Edward. Working for a large corporation meant many moves for Dick and his family. They were transferred from Chicago to Atlanta, GA; then Chattanooga, TN; followed by a move to a lake front home they built near Ooltewah, TN. Those moves were followed by transfers to Columbia, MD; Mission Viejo, CA; Pleasanton, CA; and finally Dallas, TX. Dick took early retirement in 1986, and they chose Oregon's central coast as their retirement location and built a home near Depoe Bay. As a teen Dick played soccer and baseball, and later began playing both golf and his favorite sport, tennis. He was a certified SCUBA diver and jazz his favorite style of music. He was actively involved in his children's activities as a member of PTA, swim team booster club, and he coached both Little League and soccer. After moving to Oregon, he was a member of the homeowner's association, serving as an officer and on the board of directors. Until the last few years, he continued playing tennis at least once a week. He was an intelligent, well spoken, though private person, who enjoyed his years of retirement because he never felt defined only by his job. No matter where the family lived or traveled, Dick could be counted on to research the area as thoroughly as possible. Favorite vacation locations included the Florida Keys and the Caribbean, and a Windjammer trip was his choice for the perfect cruise. Disneyland was the site of several family reunions and he and Jan celebrated their 50th anniversary there with their family. He was preceded in death by his parents and eldest brother Edward. He is survived by his wife Jan; daughter Nancy (Robert) Davis, Oakland, CA; son John, Austin, TX; grandchildren David (Joy) Balemi, and Alex and Alicia Davis; brother Donald and sister Shirley D'Agostino, and several nieces and nephews. The Spath family wishes to thank the staff at Hillside House, Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital and Hospice, and 911 responders for the attentive care given to Richard. No services are planned, but remembrances may be sent in his name to the American Cancer Society or to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at michaeljfox.org.
