Dorothy was born in Hart, Texas on November 21, 1928 to Vernon and Ola Mae Bearden. She completed her education at West Texas State College and Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas. Dorothy fell in love with Dewayne Brandt and on September 2, 1950 they were united in marriage in Hart, Texas. They were blessed with four children, all boys. Dorothy began her elementary teaching career in Happy, Texas. In 1955 Dorothy and Dewayne moved to Toledo, Oregon where Dorothy taught at Arcadia School and then Toledo Junior High. She was with the Lincoln County School District for 23 years. Dorothy's faith was very important to her. Even though her own sons and her career as a dedicated teacher took her time, she was very active with the 1st Baptist Church in Toledo. She did so much more than attend Sunday services. She gave her all to projects and served on the Church Board of Directors. Dorothy was a member of Gideons International for over 30 years. Dorothy volunteered to help the homeless in Lincoln County. She especially liked Family gatherings. Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother: Dan Bearden; and her sister: Cyble Gamblin. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years Dewayne Brandt of Toledo; her four sons: Barry (Karen) Brandt of Molalla, Oregon; Dave (Dottie) Brandt of Veneta, Oregon; John (Marilyn) Brandt of Redmond, Oregon and Steve (Angela) Brandt of Wasilla, Alaska; her sisters: Ruth Gilliland of Tyler, Texas and Elva Wall of Denver, Colorado. She was the proud grandmother of 21 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. A memorial service was held September 21, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Toledo. Donations in Dorothy's memory should be sent to Gideons International. Bateman Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Pearlene was born in Athens, Tennessee on August 21, 1932 to Thomas and Maime Bidwell. Pearlene married Linn Dempsy Wills and four children were born to their marriage. Pearlene later married Ivy Ernest Miller. Ivy passed away in 2002. Pearlene was a loving wife, mother, & grandmother. In fact, most people who knew Pearlene called her "Grandma". She enriched the lives of everyone she knew. A greeting with arms wide open and unconditional love was a guarantee with every visit. She never turned down anyone who needed a meal or a place to stay. It was important to her that everyone felt loved and was cared for. Pearlene enjoyed everything about life. She worked mostly as a cook and bartender. She volunteered with the Gleaners and Food Share. Her flower gardens were colorful and fragrant. In her younger years she loved to drive and listen to country music. Pearlene's faith was immense. She attended the Abundant Life Center and walked with Jesus each and every day. She feared nothing and accepted everything life gave her because she knew God was beside her. Pearlene was preceded in death by her husband Ivy Miller and two of her children, Danny Wills and Johnny Wills. Pearlene is survived by her daughter Vickie Flores of the Mid to Northern Territories of California; her son: Tommy Wills Sr. of Toledo, Oregon; her grandchildren: Malcolm Little Jr. and Daniel Wills of Toledo, Oregon, Tommy Wills Jr. of Eddyville, Oregon and Fawn Forrester of Culver, Oregon. She also leaves a legacy of many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-grandchildren, and so many others who returned the love that Pearlene gave so freely. A funeral service was held at Bateman Funeral Home followed by burial at Toledo Cemetery. Q was born in Texas, graduated from high school in California, and later relocated to Oregon. He met and married his wife Betty in Minnesota. He had many talents and worked in the woodworking and welding inspection trades, until retiring. He is survived by his loving wife Betty, and many other dear family and friends. Q was a friendly, caring man. He loved the simple pleasures of life; spending time with family and friends, nature, exploring, fishing, crabbing, photography, tinkering with motors, and tending his yard. He was a lifelong learner, and enjoyed teaching and showing others, especially kids, something new. Q was a faithful member in his church and AA. His welcoming and caring nature, warm smile, hugs, and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His favorite spots were the Salmon River and Pacific City. Koloen July 16, 1937-September 7, 2013 John A. Koloen, 76, a resident of Independence died Saturday, September 7, 2013. He was born on July 16, 1937 in Silverton, Oregon the son of Oscar and Anna Overlund Koloen. He was raised and attended school in Valsetz. He served 23 years in the US Navy and retired as a Petty Officer First Class in May of 1973. While stationed in Yokosuka, Japan he met his future bride, Misako Hayashi, and they were married on January 17, 1969 in Tokyo, Japan. They lived in the states for a few years and then returned to Japan to live for five years during the 1970's. While in Japan he trained as a fire fighter. John also served five years in the Merchant Marines. Prior to moving to Independence John and his wife of 44 years lived in Waldport and Otis. He worked as a bus driver for CARTS and as a school bus driver for sport trips and church groups. He enjoyed camping, picnicking, hiking and hunting for thunder eggs. He is survived by his wife Misako Koloen of Independence, brothers Richard Koloen and his wife Sharon of Dallas and James Koloen of Florence along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Anna Koloen, a brother Bill Koloen and a sister Beverly McGreger. A gathering for family and friends will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, September 14th at the home of Dick and Sharon Koloen at 860 SW River Dr. Dallas. She was born in San Bernardino, CA June 14, 1921 to Donald and Irma Keir. She graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1938 and went on to attend Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa (1938-40). Later she married Ray Hunter and raised a family in Colton, California. During these years she worked for the school district as a secretary. She moved to the Eastern Sierras where she worked for the Mono County Office of Education. She loved the beauty of the Sierras. Her daughter, Kathy and grandchildren Shelly and Kim moved to the Sierras to be near her. For the past two and a half years she was living near her daughter, Pat in Portland where she enjoyed attending musical events, movies, a ride on the stern wheeler on the Columbia, visiting with people, and going out to dinner. She deeply valued family and friendship, loved her dogs, enjoyed teaching as many as she could how to make a good pie crust, and was an advocate for education. It was her wish not to have a memorial service and to have her ashes placed in the sea. She is survived by her daughters, Pat Hunter, Kathy Padgett (Dick); granddaughters Kim Fitzgerald (Jim), Shelly Dunn (Steve); great granddaughters, Lauren, Monica, and Natalie. Memorial donations may be made to St. James Santiago Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 789, Lincoln City, OR 97367 and designated to the school's scholarship fund in memory of June K. Hunter. She was voted Business of the year by the Chamber of Commerce in 2000, but Jan always said her greatest accomplishment was being a mother to her seven (7) children. Gary was born September 28, 1947, in Toledo, Oregon, to Harry and Mona (Basford) Norick. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, and played Tuba in the Marine Corps Band. He was discharged from the service in 1969, at which time he returned to Toledo. For the next decade and a half, he worked as a Sawyer for various lumber mills in the Toledo area, and, for a time, drove a truck throughout the region for Georgia-Pacific when they had their plywood mill at Toledo. In the mid-1980's when the mill closed its doors, he was hired on as a fork truck operator for what was then known as Larkin's Lumber Yard in Newport. He stayed on at this job through 2 changes in store ownership, and retired from ProBuild in 2010. Gary was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping, especially when doing so with his brothers and/or his son. He also enjoyed collecting, and watching, old movies, especially those starring John Wayne, James Cagney, or Humphrey Bogart, his favorite actors. Gary was preceded in death by his father: Harry Norick, in 1972; his stepfather: Wes Turney, in 1989; his mother: Mona Turney, in 1997; and his partner: Alice Walborn in 2011. Gary is survived by two daughters: Christy (Dave) Huguely of Newport, and Andrea Norick of Toledo; a son: Garrett Norick of Newport; three sisters: Aloma Templeton of Marysville, WA, Betty Jacobson Duncan of Toledo, and Carolyn Robertson of Buckley, WA; two brothers: Larry (Joyce) Norick of Portland, and Randy (Sharon) Norick of Camas, WA; former wives: Mary Callister Oleman of Newport, and Annette Pearce Norick of Toledo; two granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Lee married her husband Glen McKinley in 1980. For many years they owned McKinley Industrial and Grandpa's Feed & Pet Supply. She loved to work in her greenhouse and gardens. Lee is preceded in death by her father William Ford. She is survived by her husband: Glen McKinley; mother: Barbara Ford; siblings: Bruce & Ann Ford; children: Angie Smith & Eric Collins, Karen Damon, Vern Smith, and Tamara & Adam Bailey; grandchildren: Alyssa Collins and Mechell Bailey, and was soon expecting her first great-grandson.
