Pedersen Sheila E. Pedersen, 85, of Salem, Ore., died Nov. 13, 2009 in Lebanon. She was born Feb. 21, 1924 to Leon Hull and Eva Hauck in Lake Preston, S.D. She graduated from high school in Huntington Park, Calif., studied foreign trade at University of California, Los Angeles, and psychology at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany. She lived, worked and raised seven children in the Newport and Toledo area. She worked as a purchasing agent for Georgia-Pacific's Toledo division from 1963 to 1968, and worked as an executive secretary for Publishers Paper Company sawmill division in Toledo from 1968 to 1984. While in Toledo, she was an active member and past president of Business and Professional Women and served as Oregon state president in 1983. She was also a member and president of the Toledo Emblem Club. She was an avid book collector. Her love of books gained her recognition for creating and maintaining the "friends of the library" in the retirement community of Leisure World in Seal Beach, Calif. where she lived from 1985-1991. She enjoyed hunting, gardening, canning, building, painting and repairing. She enjoyed knitting and sewing and quilting. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jim Hull and Rodney Hull. She is survived by her children, Stephen J. Nevill of Troy, Mont., Judy L. Pedersen Nevill of Lincoln City, Sheila K. Pedersen Nevill of Cascadia, Marty L. Pedersen of Gleneden Beach, Michael S. Pedersen of Toledo, Leif H. Pedersen of Alsea, and Cindy P. Pedersen-Liesinger of Salem; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She then retired and relocated to Lincoln City. She loved going to the beach and collecting agates. She was an accomplished home decorator and also created floral decorations. She was a 32-year member of the Toledo Eagles Auxiliary, where she worked her way through the chairs in the auxiliary from madam outside guard to the office of madam president in 1991 to 1992. For the last four years, she held the office of madam treasurer and chairperson for the auxiliary charity for Toledo Food Share. She enjoyed crocheting, bowling, crafts, charity work and her family. She was preceded in death by her father, William "Harvey" Wallace; her husband, Eugene P. Ferguson; and daughter, Kathy Sue Ferguson II. She is survived by her mother, Elsie J. (Snyder) Wallace of Toledo; son, Peter Ferguson of Toledo; brother, William H. She was a native Oregonian, who lived in Salem and Newport, and loved living at the coast. Her blessings in life were her family and wonderful friends who included her Red Hat Ladies club, her card club ladies, her weekly happy hour ladies and many other friends. She was preceded in death by son, Mark Edward Kuhl; brother, Robert Kent; and grandson, Joshua Kuhl. She was born to Harold and Ruby in Farmington, Ohio, where she lived until age 11. She moved to a farm outside Newton Falls just prior to her father's death. She and her mother stayed there until Alice's graduation from Newton Falls High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing at Saint Luke's School of Nursing in Cleveland in 1968. She worked as a public health nurse in inner-city Cleveland while pursuing her master's degree at Case Western Reserve. She married James Arthur Davidson in August of 1968. They had two children, daughter Ann Claire, born in 1972 and son William John, born in 1973. They were married for 22 years, until his death in an automobile accident in 1990. While raising their children, they lived in Canada, England, Colorado, Vermont and Ohio. She worked as a nurse during these years specializing in public health, maternity, medical-surgical, neurological, oncology and hospice nursing. In 1988, she received her PhD in Nursing from the School of Nursing, University of Colorado, Denver. She assumed a dual role as assistant professor of nursing at the university and head of research at Boulder Community Hospital. In 1994, she was awarded a research fellowship at Harvard University, where she worked on a National Institutes of Health funded investigation of the role of environmental complexity in the physical and mental wellbeing of the elderly. In 2001, she received a research fellowship to travel to Pari, Italy to study with complexity science researchers at the Pari Institute. In 1997, she began traveling via RV with long time companion, John Smith. They traveled extensively throughout the United States, before purchasing a home in Seal Rock in 2006. She and John enjoyed the beautiful Oregon coastal summers and drove the RV south to visit family in the winter. She loved gardening, traveling and was a good food and micro-brew enthusiast and dedicated environmentalist. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Arthur Davidson. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 30, 2010 at her son John's restaurant, The Crushery, 1579 S. Pearl Street, Denver. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, 2820 SE Ferry Slip Rd., Newport OR, 97365 or to a charity of one's choice.
