She was born April 11, 1934 to Tom and Ellen (Kuhn) Voss in Lima, Mont. She attended grade school and graduated from high school in White Hall, Mont. She moved from Montana to Oregon, living in various areas throughout Oregon. She worked as a bookkeeper for Harbor Village Mobile Home Park in Newport for 18 years and enjoyed her work. She enjoyed cooking for her sons and grandchildren. She was always a great mother and caretaker to everyone she knew, and took the best care of her husband, Pete. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Ellen Voss. She is survived by her husband of more than 56 years, Pete Peterson of Newport; sons, Lee (Romona) Peterson of Ten Mile, Ore., and Lloyd (Lynn) Peterson of Chehalis, Wash.; former daughter-in-law, Judith Peterson; brother, Ken (Helen) Voss of Washington; grandchildren, Rex (Nona) Peterson of Chehalis, Julie Peterson of Eugene, Renee Peterson of Roseburg, Jennifer Peterson of Newport; and Myriah Peterson of Roseburg; and three great-grandchildren. He was born Sept. 4, 1931 to Harry and Ruth Thissell in Tidewater, Ore. He worked in the woods and at one time owned his own timber falling business. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also was an Oregon State University Beavers fan and always watched or attended their games whenever possible. Every year, his garden was a showplace. OSP Sgt. Justin McGladrey says 57-year-old John Hunter and 55-year-old Debra Hunter died at the scene Thursday after their pickup was struck by a vehicle that crossed the center line for unknown reasons. The driver of that vehicle, 53-year-old Debra Simmons of Depoe Bay, is hospitalized in Portland. ---------- OSP RELEASE: A Toledo-area couple died and a third person was injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle head-on crash on Highway 20 about five miles east of Newport. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation. Names of the involved individuals are being released. According to OSP Sergeant Justin McGladrey, on February 11, 2010 at approximately 4:55 p.m. a Subaru Forester driven by DEBRA A. SIMMONS, age 53, from Depoe Bay, was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 5 when, for an undetermined reason, it crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with an eastbound Ford Ranger pickup occupied by two people. After impact, the vehicles came to rest in the eastbound lane and shoulder area. Both occupants in the pickup were pronounced deceased at the scene. They are identified as driver JOHN EUGENE HUNTER, age 57, and passenger DEBRA ANNETTE HUNTER, age 55, both from Toledo. SIMMONS was transported by Pac West ambulance to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital and then transferred by ground ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. Safety restraint use information is not available at this time. OSP troopers from the Newport Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Toledo Police Department, Toledo Fire Department, and ODOT assisted at the scene. Highway 20 was closed about three hours with a detour established. Bumgarner Jr. John A. Bumgarner Jr., 61, of Seal Rock, Ore., died Feb. 1, 2010. He was born Sept. 18, 1948 to John and Zette Bumgarner. He grew up in Nyssa, Ore. He moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 1975, where he resided with his sister, Mary, and his brother-in-law, Glen Tuttle, until September 1998. With their guidance and love, John, who had Downs Syndrome, trained and worked for an agency that cleaned office buildings. He was employed at Dimond Boulevard Burger King in Anchorage from 1982 until 1998. He loved going to work and outlasted several managers. He knew that he was an important part of the team and just knew that Burger King would shut down without him there to keep everyone in line. He rode public transportation to and from work and was known as "Cowboy John." He then moved to Oregon and lived with his niece, Cozy Reel, in Lincoln City, then on to Newport, where he continued to work for Burger King until 2007 for a total of 24 years. In 2008, he moved to Seal Rock to live with his sister, Nellye, and brother-in-law, Bill Elliott. He enjoyed life and loved to fish, bowl, dance and play his country CDs. He spent many hours working on his studies and filled many notebooks with his writing. He lived to tease and be teased back. If he called you a turkey, baboon or bowlegged, you knew you were loved. He said many times, "I'm trying to be nice, but you won't let me." He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Zette Bumgarner; his brother, Harold Bumgarner; and sister Mary Tuttle. She was born Dec. 31, 1942 to Helen and Bill Fulkerson in St. Louis, Mo. She graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis in 1963. She later received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, and her Master of Arts from University of Minnesota, and Nurse Practitioner from Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. She worked in the nursing field in Missouri, California, Canada, eastern Oregon and finally at the Oregon coast. Various local positions included being director of nursing at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport, being in charge of the county-wide school based health clinics while at the Lincoln County Health Department and finally working as Nurse Practitioner at Eddyville School with her good friend and principal Don McDonald. Her heart was centered on the wellbeing of children and she impacted the community with her nursing skills and compassion and care for children and families. Her skills and determination were instrumental in starting the Waldport Clinic. She had a quick wit and loved people. She made many good friends from Yachats, Waldport and the Newport area and in her church. She relished volunteering at Cape Perpetua and enjoyed leading walks to the Giant Spruce. She was a cook par excellence and used her skills to cook and organize monthly dinners for the poor at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She was active in many other activities in the church. She also loved to garden and grew flowers and vegetables that she shared with many in the community. She loved the Oregon coast, nature, and her two beloved cats, Eudora Rose and Gus. She is survived by her sister Barbara Bade of Tulsa, Okla.; brother-in-law Gary; sisters-in-law, Karen Minnis and Carol Furness; and her nephew Tim. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at St. Luke's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, 1353 Highway 101 South in Waldport. He was born Dec. 23, 1944 in Riverside, Calif. In 1962, he graduated from Riverside Polytechnic High School. After graduating, he enlisted and spent much of his four years in the U.S. Navy at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland as a meteorologist. He returned to Riverside and attended Riverside City College and then graduated from California State University in Chico. He worked as an auditor for the State of California and a small local agency in Willows, Calif., where he audited dairy farms. He lived for many years in the San Francisco Bay area as an auditor for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, where he worked with cities, states and tribal communities across the west. He retired in 2000 at the age of 55 and moved to Siletz, where he enjoyed life in retirement along the Siletz River. He loved history and spent countless hours researching family genealogy and traveling around the U.S. discovering new information, new connections and long lost family members. He was a member of the Lincoln County Genealogical Society, serving as treasurer for many years and giving lectures on a variety of subjects related to genealogical research. He provided one-on-one help to people regarding their family trees, helped survey cemeteries in Lincoln County. He was kind and generous with his time and resources and volunteered for many organizations and efforts, particularly in the Newport area. He is survived by his sister, Pat (Lloyd) Rust of San Diego; brothers, Bill (Marscia) Thomas of Riverside, and Jerry (Eileen) Thomas of San Jacinto, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. His family and friends will have an open house to celebrate his life at his home in Siletz from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14. She was born Feb. 2, 1958 to Dale Gunter and Joy Kern. In 1976, she graduated from Moscow High School in Moscow, Idaho. She earned her bachelor's degree in childhood education from the University of Idaho in 1979. She spent most of her childhood living in Moscow, and as an adult, she lived in Idaho, Washington and Montana before settling in Oregon. She worked as a child care provider for her grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Moscow. She enjoyed reading, writing, mini road trips and playing with her grandchildren. She also loved photography and singing. She was preceded in death by her father, Dale Gunter. She is survived by her children Tiffany Gunter, Tim Davenport, Jennifer Seufert, and Steffany Seufert; siblings, Lynn Yapuncich and Steven Gunter; brother-in-law Mark Yapuncich; sister-in-law Wendi Gunter; and grandchildren, Nicholas, Benjamin, Jacob, Jayden, Tristan and Joseph. He was born Nov. 5, 1930 to Captain Frank and Stella Sijota Fogarty in Newport. He attended grade school and high school in Newport. In his senior year, 1949, at Newport High School, he was chosen to play in the second Shriner's All-Star Football Game at the Multnomah Stadium in Portland. He was awarded a football scholarship at the University of Oregon. He played two years under the coaching of Jim Aiken and Bill Bowerman. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and was stationed in Okinawa during his two years and was honorably discharged Feb. 6, 1953. On Sept. 2, 1966, he married Marie Culter in Vancouver, Wash. He was a longshoreman for 45 years. He worked in Newport for 12 years and then transferred to Portland Local #8, where he worked for 33 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Stella Fogarty; sister, Barbara Grogan; and brothers, Frank Fogarty, Joseph Fogarty, Robert Fogarty and George Fogarty. He is survived by his wife, Marie Fogarty; daughters, Arlynn (Greg) Kelleher of Houston, Texas and Kelly Fogarty of Los Angeles; son, Michael (Monica) Fogarty of Woodland, Wash.; sister-in-laws, Kathleen Fogarty, Donna Fogarty and Frances Fogarty; grandchildren, Chelsea and Max Kelleher of Houston and Danielle and Sean Fogarty of Woodland, Wash. A graveside service was held Monday at Eureka Cemetery in Newport. Memorial donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the Hospice Care Center, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632. She was born July 14, 1938 to Floyd W. and Vera M. (Winfree) Page in Bend. She attended grade school at Kenwood and graduated in 1956 from Bend Senior High School. She majored in music, played drums in six different bands, and won the Master Musician award. She earned a scholarship to Boise State University. She played other instruments as well, such as piano and guitar, performed recitals, and enjoyed tap dancing. She married Lloyd Estes in 1961 in Carson City, Nev. and maintained their home in Tangent. They had three children together, and she was also a stepmother. On June 4, 2000, she married William E. Harris. She and William enjoyed traveling in their motor home, spending winters in Arizona and Mexico and making new friends on those trips. She drove school bus in Albany for several years and then in Alsea for 17 years. She had a passion for dogs, raising German Shepherds from 1970 to 1989 and then Rottweilers for the next 10 years. She trained and showed her dogs, as well as giving obedience classes. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing, dancing, gardening and fishing. She was a member of the Waldport Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gherig's Disease) at the Mayo Clinic in 2007. Because of the outstanding help, support and equipment provided by the ALS Association, the many doctors of the ALS clinic in Portland and especially the Benton Hospice staff she was allowed a substantially better quality of life. She was preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Vera Page; two sisters; and one brother. She is survived by her husband, William E. Harris; her three children, Larry Estes of Keizer, Kelly Jones of Montana and Meloney Brittani Boese of Montana; stepdaughters Lavonne Haskins of Laramie, Wyo. and Lorraine Sedgin of South Carolina; brother Jerry; 26 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, great nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Waldport. Twin Oaks Funeral Home in Albany is handling arrangements. He was born March 22, 1935 to Earle and Elberta (Murnan) Settle in Inglewood, Calif. He graduated from high school in California in 1953, and joined the U.S. Navy and later received an honorable discharge. He often shared his boyhood memories of living in Big Bear and Lancaster, Calif. In 1955, he moved with his family to southern Oregon, and then later moved with his parents to Waldport. Over the years, he was employed in a variety of jobs, ranging from the logging industry to retail sales. His hobbies included woodcrafting, working on cars and trucks and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earle and Elberta Settle. He is survived by his brother James (Judy) Settle, of Surprise, Ariz.; and nieces, Cori DeWitt and Kim McGrath. Kasner Hanyan J. "Slim" Kasner, of Blodgett, Ore., died Jan. 5, 2010 at his home. Born in 1917, he was raised in Panora, Iowa and then joined the Navy in 1936. He met his wife, Leone, in Honolulu while stationed at the Pearl Harbor Sub Base, and they were married in Pensacola, Fla. in January 1941. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific, and after the war he continued his naval career, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1956. Upon his retirement, Slim, Leone and their four children moved to the Lincoln County property they called Shamrock K Ranch. From 1956 until his death, he ran the Shamrock K. He also drove the Eddyville school bus from 1957 to 1968, was a partner in the Corvallis real estate firm Oregon Farms and Ranches, custom baled hay in the summer and occasionally filled in for the shop teacher at Eddyville High School. For many years, he was active in the Oregon Cattleman's Association, Oregon Beef Council, Lincoln County Soil and Water Conservation District, Future Farmers of America, and several 4-H clubs. He was a regular at every agricultural event in Lincoln County. He was preceded in death by his sons, Michael and Patric; stepbrother Bill; half brothers, Corky and Tom; half sister Betty; grandson Andrew; and great-grandson Olyron. He is survived by his wife Leone; his children, Candace and James; sisters, Betty Warner of Des Moines, Iowa, Johnie Wall of Panora, Iowa, and Peachie Schmidt of Dorrance, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was born May 24, 1930 to Ross and Bessie (Clark) Swancutt in Riceville, Iowa. "Red" grew up in Riceville, Iowa, the youngest of six siblings. In 1948, he graduated from Riceville High School. He married Beverly, the love of his life, on June 29, 1951. They lived in Riceville when their first son, David Wayne, was born. They moved to Northwood, Iowa in 1954, where they had their second son, Steven Jay. He and Bev lost an infant son, Neil, in 1956. They returned to Riceville where he purchased and ran the Riceville Locker. Their fourth child, Melissa, was born in 1960 in Riceville. He was a master butcher, skilled in meat processing and sausage making. After years owning the locker, he became the proprietor of Murphy's Tavern. In 1985, he and Bev moved to Oregon. They retired to Newport in 2002. For 15 years, he managed Safe-Lock Storage in South Beach. He was a member of the L.O.O.M. (Moose) Lodge 2238 and the Salmon River Athletic Club and greatly enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Bessie Swancutt; his son, Neil; sisters, Doris Beine and Hazel Pubaldi; and brothers, Dale Swancutt and William Swancutt. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Beverly Swancutt of Newport; son, David (Kerri) Swancutt of Riceville, Iowa; son, Steven (Susan) Swancutt of Manly, Iowa; daughter, Melissa Swancutt of Newport; sister, Jean (Swancutt) Park of Junction City; and seven grandchildren. Services will be held in Oregon and Iowa. Dates will be announced. Memorial donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to a charity of one's choice.
