There were the following ministers in Orkney named SMELLIE in April 1836 (none in Stromness that I know of, but would welcome any contrary advice): James, minister of St. Andrew's Parish (my GGGgfather) George (son of above), licensed by Kirkwall Presbytery April 1835, first sermon that week in Deerness; then May 1835 to Lady Parish, Sanday; ordained 30 March 1836 (two other sons were also ministers in Orkney, but not for 10 years after your baptism) It looks like your ancestor could have been named after George SMELLIE, who was ordained 4 days before her baptism. Can anyone explain why this would have occurred? Does anyone have information that would place George in Stromness at that time?
