Sandwick is a typical Norse descriptive placename simply meaning "the Sandy Bay" - as such it is found in Orkney and Shetland and will occur more than once in both. Orkney has at least two Sandwicks. The parish of Sandwick which took its name from the Bay o' Skaill, a large sandy bay which would have originally been called Sandvik until some Norse chieftain built a dwelling (skallr) there of such a size as to become the predominant feature of the landscape. Hence the Bay of Skaill. There is also a bay in South Ronaldsay simply called Sandwick. -- Sigurd Towrie - Blackhall - Kirbister - Stromness - Orkney E-Mail: sigurd@orkneyjar.com Orkneyjar - The Heritage of Orkney: http://www.orkneyjar.com
