About scanning the 1654 map To make it legible on the net - the problem is no matter how high you scan it a monitor will only display at about 75 dpi. Instead of scanning the entire map do it in small portions(like each island). When scanning, set your out put at 200% - 300% - or as high as you can. To keep size down, scan at greyscale rather than colour. But it may still be illegible. The real solution (though you can't view on the internet) is to scan - again in small bits, at 200+% and greyscale at min. 300 dpi -- and save as a tif. Put in a link to the bits on your website and viewers can download them to their computers and print out hopefully a legible copy for themselves. You may want to try this first to see if my % and dpi suggestions are high enough.... mjc
