Hello Alan, The pound Scots was originally a coin on par with the English pound from the reign of James VI (I). It gradually lost value until it was only worth 1 shilling 8 pence, yet prices were often still figured in the Scottish currency. The two difference values were differentiated by "Scots" or "sterling" as in "three pounds Scots" or "twelve pounds sterling." Hope this helps sort it out for you. Doug Nicol, Harvey's Lake PA
