Listers - If you do not have the 1881 CD set, this will probably be of no interest to you. Meg Greenwood - Oklahoma Some of you have invested in the 1881 Census CDs, and are learning the myriad of ways to search through them. I have just learned a method of searching for individual addresses, but it takes a bit of scrolling. The NEIGHBORS tab is not fully understood It does not just give the identities of the immediate neighbors, as I thought was the case. It allows you to scroll throughout the ENTIRE CD for whatever you might want to find. There is just no way to know WHERE you are going. These CDs are not indexed to search for addresses. If you want to see who lived in a certain house, or who lived in the lighthouse on a specific Island, unless you know their name, there is no way to find it. However, if you knew the FIRST name listed for a particular city/town/village, it would be a simple matter to start by locating this individual, hit the NEIGHBORS tab, and scroll down through the rest of the city, entry by entry. Yes, it is time consuming, but with the help of knowing the FIRST name of the listings for each city, there is at least a starting point. Who knows what you might find by chance ! It was a very hot day here in Oklahoma, and I stayed inside once things were watered early in the morning ! SO, I began to find the first family entry for each enumerated city in the Orkney listings. What follows is the list of the FIRST entry for a city - do a SEARCH for this person - I just use the Scotland Highlands disc, not the INDEX. I tried to chose a name from the family that would yield only one individual, sometimes a year is needed to be specific. It will generally say "Enumeration District 1 - Page 1" I did this ONLY for Orkney - give me a break - I did not get heat stroke ! There are 4 boxed in areas for SEARCH : 1) Individual - enter the first and last name. 2) Birth year - only needed occasionally, leave blank otherwise. 3) Birthplace - use <All> for the County, and fill in the City. 4) Census Place - Region is 'Scotland Highlands', County is <All>, leave City blank. Hit SEARCH. If you get a 'Modify Search' warning, check spelling, it must be EXACT. When the right one is found, hit the NEIGHBORS button, and start scrolling ! Some of these districts are VERY LARGE - takes a long time to scroll through ! There are about 40 Districts, some are listed twice, and are at 2 sites in the census, don't know why. Zetland/Shetland is listed as found in the Census.
