Hi Folks, As the volunteer host for the Orkney Gen Web project I'm writing to ask your assistance. I would like to do two things: 1) Gather a list of all Orkney surname sites (such as my Rendall.net) and all personal homepages that have online family trees that include Orcadian ancestors. If you have such a site, or know of one, I would appreciate it if you would send me: a) the URL b) the title of the site c) a brief description of the site that I may include at the Orkney Gen Web page. You may email me at anne@rendall.net 2) I have long thought that it would be to everyone's advantage if it we could collect Orcadian GEDCOM files in a central place on line. (GEDCOM is a standard format that most, if not all, family tree software programs can export to - this facilitates file sharing). At my website I have installed a perl program that resides on the UNIX server that hosts my site that takes a GEDCOM file and creates a family tree. It can remove information for living people from the tree, it creates a searchable database, decendency and pedigree charts, and allows all or part of the file to be extracted for download. You can see it at http://rendall.net/trees/ I would be happy offer my site as a repository for Orcadian GEDCOM files, or to form with others an ad hoc online Orkney Family History organization and rent web space else where. Rootsweb would be an alternative if they offer private cgi-bins, or GEDCOM hosting but I don't believe they do at the present time. I appreciate your assistance and feedback. and. . .
