    1. [ORKNEY-L] Site for explaining obscure occupations
    2. Listers - There was a website posted to the 'Lanark Digest' list I also subscribe to. It is called "GenDocs" and it lists many of the the usually 'unknown' terms for occupations that need 'translating'. These terms are explained briefly - like: ALNAGER - An official who examined the quality of woollen goods and stamped them with the town seal of approval; or DORCAS - A seamstress; or FOWER - A street sweeper of cleaner. Go to: http://www.gendocs.demon.co.uk/trades.html I found this site extremely interesting, and might clear up some cloudy ideas of what our ancestors did for a living ! Many birth documents list the Father's name and occupation - sometimes it sounds like another surname as my own family's listing of 'Carter' . When I saw the original document, it became clear that his occupation was a carter - one who drives a cart ! It was listed on the above website. A relative had been trying to research the Carter family and coming up with blanks ! - Meg Greenwood in Oklahoma
