I just discovered this site. One of my ancestors, William Gunn, I believe, was born in Thurso in 1763. He eventually became a weaver and married Isabella Robbie and had one of his four children baptized in Thurso in 1790 with a Swanson and a McLeod as witnesses. Was it a common practice for relatives to be used as witnesses for christenings or was there some other pattern? I also understand that a group of weavers left the area and moved to the Perth area to find employment. Does anyone have information on this or a resource where I can find that information. Thanks. Margie P.S. We visited Westford, Massachusetts, this past fall. This was where a Sir James Gunn died in the year 1398 when he was on an expedition with Prince Henry Sinclair.
