Standardised spelling is a modern (and passing ?) fad. I one generation of Stewarts spelt Stewart Stuart Steward Stuard Stwart You've got be very opened minded about spelling of names. I know of an Emma Jane who migrated from Somerset to New South Wales and married as Imogen. The phonetics are nearly the same but the spelling is way out. The French Canadian name Reneau from Quebec shows up on Massachusetts records as Raynoe, Noe, Noi, or Know !
