At that time the Hudson Bay Company only brought over picked men, who were employed at one of their North-West forts near Winnipeg. Grandfather was a trusted employee, and on one occasion was sent with a prisoner from the North- West forts to what was then Little York, now Toronto. We always understood he had walked over one thousand miles with this prisoner and landed him safely. After some time he resigned from the employ of the Company.
