I don't have any Fletts/Flatts in my tree, but from what I've seen in the records there are a couple of variations for the name Flett: Flatt and Fleet among them. Interestingly Flett is the earliest recorded Orkney Surname. It is an Old Norse word for "witch" , according to Gregor Lamb's "Orkney Surnames" the name is associated with the parish of Harray, especially the tunship of Netherbrough and is the forth most common Orcadian surname after Sinclair, Rendall and Johnston. According to Lamb, "this surname has been carried abroad and is frequently found in New Zealand, Canada and USA where it is found in the form Flatt." (A tunship is a unit of farmable land) Regards, Anne M. Rendall volunteer host Orkney GenWeb and Orkney-L http://rendall.net/orkney/
