    3. Hi Dan, I hope this will help with the second part of your query. The 1871 census for Ontario is online at <http://www.archives.ca/exec/naweb.dll?fs&020108&e&top&0>. However there was no Malcolm Grant when I checked. A source for the 1861 census index would be the publications of the Kent County Genealogical Society at <http://www.angelfire.com/on/kentogs/> There is a Malcolm Grant in Donald Whyte's A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants before Confederation. He gives the emigration date to Kent as 1849. You might have a better chance with the 1851 census.
