    3. The "Scots Origins" site (ScotlandsPeople site?) from which Suzie derived her list below, does not appear to include every James Thomson that may exist for those birth years. I'm not sure of the parameters Suzie used for her search - maybe there is some glitch in the search engine for the GROS site? In Suzie's list, I don't even see any births for the year, 1861, at all. There was a James Thomson born on South Ronaldsay on 10 June 1861, Barswick (in South Parish), whose parents were Donald Thomson and Barbara Gray, and he is not listed in Suzie's list below. He is also not listed on Walt Custer's IGI site. I'm not sure why the GROS did not list this particular James Thomson... it's odd. He is certainly in the actual registers! If you also go to www.cursiter.com that has the names of the parents, though it is not complete. Hope this helps. James was said to have been born on 13 April 1861 in Orkney. He left there at about the age of 17 and moved to San Francisco before joining the 1898 gold rush to the Yukon. In 1903 he settled in Vancouver where he acquired property and was known for his philanthropy. He was a very fit person, noted for long distance swimming in summer and he skated in winter. James was proprietor of the Ivanhoe Hotel in Vancouver when he died on 12 December 1948. Apparently James did not marry and did not have any descendants. However he had four cousins in Vancouver and four in Oregon when he died. Regards Philip Booker
