My connection is through my daughter- I have Christian Burghar born 1803 married to Archibold Scollayin 1822, one of their daughters, Jean,born 1827 married George Bews in 1858, one of their sons,William born 1866 married Marjory Drever in 1890 finally their daughter Marjory is my daughters great grandmother. I remember reading an article in the OFHS magazine about the Burghar and families and about Archibold Schollay. Fiona

Her "christian" name is spelt just like that in the baptismal records and on her gravestone. In the Death Register it is spelt as Christina. It is Christa and Christiana in various cencus returns. Schollay is likewise spelt Scholley, Scollay, Schaly, and Scholly. Her husband had died at an early 46 years of age in 1838...earlier than census...1841. In 1851 she is described as a widow, formerly a farmer's wife. " Christian & Archibald's children: Jean chr 10-9-1827 , m George Bews (plus 5 other children: Christina Armit; Wm; Henry-d 1834 aged 7 weeks; Archibald-died 16 Aug 1861 aged 28 yrs; Henry) "The eldest, Jean chr 10-9-1827 m George Bews and she d at Northhouse, which is between Noltland & Noup, on the 19th June 1912 at the age of 84 of old age. Her nephew,Thomas Rendall, notified the register of the death. In 1861, her son William Scolly described as a 28 year old shoemaker, was living at Cubigo with his Rousay born wife Ann (INKSTER) and children. A servant, John Burgess aged 14 was an apprentice shoemaker. Elizabeth was aged 4 then, Jean was born at Cubbigo on the 20th Feb 1858, and Robina Inkster Scollay was b on the 16th Jan 1860. A son William was b c. 1863 and they lived at North Cubbigeo in 1871. A further 10 years on and the only occupants of that croft were William Scolly aged 18 and his sister aged 22. Both were unmarried. The Costie family had taken over North Cubbigeo by 1891." (at top of page 151 : " Much of the information for this chapter...comes from Gavin Mowat Rendall of Purley, Eng. Regarding WILLIAM BEWS- the only one listed in B O' W was b 1931 Quoybirse m Irene Rendall 1956 and is listed as a farmer at Quoybirse, Westray. Regarding Marjory Drever- none listed in index of B O' W.
