Hi William, I was checking my file and I too have a William Mowat Stout married to a Barbara Sinclair Jan 16, 1902. But it appears in my file that Stout is actually his last name. His parents are Sutherland Stout and Helen Mowat Swanson from Walls. Sutherland is my gg Uncle. The Mary Alice Stout you mention as the witness would then be William's first cousin, daughter of my gg grandfather Benjamin Stout. I don't know if this helps you any or not, but I hope so. I am getting a bit confused at the moment regarding my Grt Grt Grandfather John Sinclair and his daughter to Jane (Jean) Davidson. Barbara Sinclair was born 27 May 1872 at Herston South Ronaldsay I have a marriage of Barbara C Sinclair to William Mowat Stout on 16 Jan 1902 at Salwick Brims. (Statutory Marriages 032/01 0001). The age of Barbara is slightly out as it gives age 27 on the marriage cert as she would have been about 29. Barbara was residing at Salwick at the time of the marriage. I can find no record on Scotlands people for a marriage between a Barbara Sinclair and a William Mowat. I have found a Barbara Sinclair age about 1875 living at Salwick on the 1901 Census, she is living at the same address as William Mowat. Now the registrar could have made an error perhaps on the marriage cert, the witness to the marriage is given as, Mary Alice Stout. The parents of Barbara on the cert are John Sinclair and Jannet Davidson. Barbara's birth cert has no middle initial (C) on it (Statutory Births 029/00 0045) I have the following MI from Osmundwall, Walls In loving memory of our dear father WILLIAM MOWAT who died at the Haven, Brims 16th Oct 1934 aged 72 years. Also our dear mother BARBARA SINCLAIR who died 17th Nov 1938 aged 65 years and our uncle JOHN SWANSON who died at Whitehouse, Brims 16th Oct 1939 aged 75 years. Also EDWARD LAUGHTON beloved husband of CHRISTINA MOWAT who died 18th June 1942 aged 35 years. Erected by the family. Note that it does not say William Mowat Stout. Note no mention of father John Sinclair who was dead by then. John Sinclair my grt grt Grandfather, died 19 Dec 1916 at Salwick Brims, (Statutory Deaths 032/01 0013), the informant is William Mowat (no Stout indicated), that being the case it would appear that he may have went to live at Salwick with his daughter Barbara sometime after. It could have been after his wife Jane (Jean) died in Herston in 1915. I have not been able to find a MI for either John or Jane. What I am hoping to find is any information that this William Mowat Stout and William Mowat are one and the same person, similarly that this is the correct Barbara Sinclair, my grt grt Aunt, the daughter of John Sinclair and Jane (Jean, Jannet) Davidson and if anyone has an indication of where they may have been buried. Hi Lori Yes this is the same family as I have, I have found William's death cert and he is registered as William Mowat Stout, the death was registered by his son, but again this states Sinclair Mowat, not Sinclair Mowat Stout. The MI only shows Mowat and not Stout. Strange the number of mistakes made here. G'day William & Lori, William, I think that you're on the right track. The Births Indexes have a William Mowat Stout born in 1862 (Walls, Orkney 3), and the only William Mowat Stout that appears to be getting married is the one you mention in 1902. If we turn to the Census Records for Walls we find the following: 1871 Census: Walls and Flotta, Orkney, 2-19) Salwick Alexander Swanston Hd M 65 Inspector of Poor Cai : Dunnet, Charlotte " W M 68 " : " Barbara " D U 36 Oki : Walls, John " S M 29 Fisherman " : " Alexander " S M 29 " " : " Betsy " Dl M 24 " : " Wm M. Stout Gs 9 Scholar " : " John Swanston Gs 6 " : ". 1891 Census: Walls and Flotta, Orkney, 2-59) Salwick, William Mowat Hd U 29 Fisherman, Seaman Emp. Oki : Walls, Barbara Swanson A U 60 Housekeeper " : " John S. " B U 26 Fisherman S/Emp. " : " John " C U 19 " " " : " Alice B. " C U 16 General servant, Domestic " : " Rosatta " C 14 Scholar " : ". Both show Barbara Swanston/Swanson as the aunt of William M. Stout/William Mowat. Lori, did Sutherland Stout marry twice? My records show that Sutherland Stout, son of James Stout and Isabella Bremner, married Mary Smith in Stromness in 1867 (Stromness No. 6). Mary being the daughter of James Smith (dec) and Ann Kantley. If we're talking about the same Sutherland Stout, many of his brother Benjamin's children ended up in Illinois. My own interest in the Stouts of Walls is with the Stouts of Misbister, Mary Ann (1862), John (1823), James (1792), and William (ca. 1765). Hope this helps David Armstrong Maylands, Western Australia
