Listers Anyone interested in the parish of Deerness may be interested to know that " Almost an Island - The Story of an Orkney Parish, Deerness" has now been published by the Deerness Social History Group. The book contains over 300 pages and gives a record of the way of country life in Deerness during the 20th century. The writers have tried to keep it light hearted and readable with plenty of stories and photos. It contains sections on farming, fishing, trades and occupations, the church, the school and a most interesting section on "Portraits of Some Parishioners". The farming section explains many jobs no longer carried out on farms including tailing neeps, tying winleens, stooking and the job of the "Staigy man" The book is now available from local bookshops.
