I would second Jan's suggestion on checking the Parish Registers on microfilm through your local LDS library. This will tell you several things. First, it'll tell you the condition of the original registers. Sometimes, they are badly damaged by damp in particular. (The Walls register is in a mess around 1800 with many lost entries). Secondly, you can often pick up your family as witnesses to other baptisms etc, and this can in turn help outline the family structure. Quite often the marriages are not recorded in the Parish Registers as "hand-festing" was legally recognized form of marriage up until 1939. If your family show up in the Census records but not in the Parish Registers, then check out what other church denominations were operating in the Parish apart from the Established Church (ie mainstream Presbyterian). In the 19th century, everytime the priesthood ad an argument, the church split resulting in Heinz 57 varieties of Presbyterians. These records have not been filmed by the Mormons and so are not on the IGI.
