    3. The furthest records of my Sinclair family are that they were living in Kirkhouse Eatside South Ronaldsay in 1821. Was Kirkhouse an area or farm in the Eastside or was it the Kirhouse itself. Willie Sinclair

    3. I assume it's this Kirkhouse that you're referring to, Willie: http://tinyurl.com/69op5a In "The Place-Names of South Ronaldsay & Burray", Gregor Lamb says of it, "Paplay 1841; occupied; private house adjacent to St Peter's Kirk." St Peter's Kirk is marked with a cross on the map. Of Paplay, Lamb says,"Papley/Paplay a district; ON [Old Norse] Papyli = Papa-byli; ON papi priest; byli place of residence; compare Papdale in Kirkwall and Papa Westray; St Peter's Kirk was established in Papley and gave the name 'St Peter's' to the whole of what is now North Parish." The other Kirkhouse in South Ronaldsay is this one: http://tinyurl.com/623wzz However, I don't think that's the one you're interested in. Norman T.
