    3. Thanks Maryann - with about 90,000 sq. miles wiped out, they say the devastation is bigger than the size of Great Britain... I've never "Googled" what the size of Great Britain is, so someone tell me if that analogy is right -- hard to imagine... Like most disasters it seems the impact is much greater than we realize at first and effects people from all over the world. And frist impressions were more than bad enough. Maryann

    3. There are beginnings of families getting together again, but the devastation there is unfathomable, I do believe I heard on the news that it was a category 5 and that we have never seen that category hit land in any recorded time. I am glad your story is one of success Lisa, so many will not be so lucky for sure.Like you I would have been beside myself trying to find family if anyone was close to it, terrible thing. When the Tusami hit the world kicked in and helped tremendously, yet these poor people have not had the help like that and it is a far worse disaster. I am not American but it bothers me. I spent one night just crying watching the disaster and crys of help from people. Tis a terrible thing Re our genealogy, Lisa you have the most wonderful site and I cant tell you how much I enjoy it, how much it has helped me with my family, sorting out who is who and where they fit in. You should be commended for sure for helping so many of us. Cathy Wagner

    3. Hi Cathy -- In regards to your query on the Oman Budge stuff, I do have some interest in being a "fellow" seeker with you on this! and would hope that anyone who might know more about Oman's possible parents/siblings, could contact me as well? Please? I know you and I, Cathy, have interacted in past years about Budge-related info, but I cannot recall just now what all we have focused upon together. My gggg-granddad was James Budge (who married Janet Duncan in 1784, a South Parish marriage), and I have been long seeking definitive proof of James' parentage. Because the Old Parish Registers have some missing years in the 1700s, and because I have discovered many incidences of folk not even being notated as having been baptized/born in these earlier registers, I cannot be sure that the one feasible "James Budge" who is notated in the OPR [baptism of 1759, 'natural' son of a Magnus Budge] can be positively ID'd as *my* 4G-grandfather. *For several reasons*, I am suspecting that my gggg-grandfather, James Budge, could very well have had a father named John Budge... and I also suspect that he may have been either a very close relative, or actually a brother, of the (1) Barbara Budge who married James Rossie, and (2) the Elizabeth Budge who married Donald Thomson. At any rate, I do sense that the Henry Budge in the 1821 Census Household living with Oman Budge was very likely (one of?) Oman's brother(s). In this 1821 Census, they are at the Millhouse which, from earlier records, I understand may have also been known as the Mill at Windwick. This Windwick angle could be a clue for us -- though we may not know it yet, or may not yet have 24/7 access to the Orkney Archives to find out - alas. I do have some of the Ledger Rentals for 'South Ronaldshay", for crops (& their taxes)... Henry Budge in "Gossigair" [Gossigar is tied to the abovementioned BUDGE women, too, and --in some records-- my own James Budge] also paid some taxes for "his half of the Mill of Windwick". There was a John Budge in Windwick notated in the Crop Ledgers circa Oct.1799, and a Robert "Annell", also in Windwick, paid his taxes that same time (October 1799). I bring up Robert Annal, because I see that a Robert Annal was a Witness for the marriage of Oman Budge to Margaret Tomison in 1805. Circa 1796/1797 or so, Maurice "Cursatter", Donald "Thompson" and my James Budge, all variously paid portions of the taxes for land at Thurrigair. My sense is that this Donald "Thompson" was the one married to Elizabeth/Elspet Budge... who, as I mentioned, *might* (warning! the sibling aspect still only theory!) might be a sister of my James Budge. It's all a mish mash mess, these Budges found living in the middle and southern part of So. Ron. at the turn of that century... more research is needed -- and this means (for me) hopefully some day returning to Kirkwall and visiting their new Library. But, Cathy (and anyone else faced with this brick wall in particular), we will have to keep digging around for info and clues! Thank you for receiving benefits from my site :-) I normally purchase the Register information and pay for the site each year on my own penny, so it is always nice to hear some kind words every now and then, to make my efforts more worthwhile - many thanks! Lisa << I am trying to determine who the parents are of my ggg grandfather Oman Budge who married Margaret Tomison 19th Aug. 1805 in SouthRonaldsay. Oman Budge was a witness at the Marriage of an Isabel Budge to Thomas Swan 18th Dec. 1817 St Margarets Hope, her parents were John Budge and Jannet Norquoy, I am clutching at straws now, but could this Isabel Budge be a sister to my Oman Budge, it wasn't unusual to have ones siblings as witnesses at these occasions? Any one else researching this family? I could surely do with a little help on this one. Thanks in advance Cathy >> {> on 9/4/05 7:14 AM <} Cathy Wagner wrote -- I am glad your story is one of success Lisa, so many will not be so lucky for sure. 3. Alas, if you had been able to visit Inga Oag in Kirkwall, I feel pretty sure she could have solved this problem. She doesn't have a computer, but I have her address.
