    1. John Robertson /Margaret Hourston
    2. I am trying to find out a wee bit more about John Robertson, son of John Robertson and Christian Johnston who was born 1797 in Stromness. He married Margaret Hourston, daughter of Robert Hourston,Lyking, and Isabella Irvine who belonged to Stromness. In various certificates, census etc John Robertson is listed as a shipping agent and a Justice of the Peace and General Agent. They had two daughters that I know of but canot find anymore children. Any help would be appreciated Fiona

    3. I have found a few snippets that may be of use to you: Stromness OPR: 17 January 1799: Isabella Irvine of Stromness and Robert Hourston of Sandwick married by dispatch (i.e. without banns being read) by Rev. William Clouston. My notes of Stromness OPR baptisms show no obvious baptism entry for Isabella: there was an Isabella born and baptised 24 August 1785, daughter of Andrew Irvine and Isabella Skea (my notes say IGI has Isabella Burney), and an Isabell (IGI has Isbell) Irvine baptised 4 Feb 1757, daughter of James Irvine and Janet Beaton, but she married Robert Cruikshank and is buried in Stromness Cemetry (A277). Turning to my Sandwick OPR notes, I find: - Robert Hourston and Isabella Irvine had a daughter Margaret christened 10 Nov 1799; - Herbert Hourston in Lyking and Isebla Irvine had an unamed daughter baptised 19 April 1801. Clearly my reading of Herbert is mistaken. - John Irving and Jannet (IGI has Jenet) Baikie residenters in Eath (i.e. Aith) had a daughter Isoball christened 12 November 1767. John and Jannet had at least 3 other children christened 1761x4. I believe John lived 1700-1799 and bought Aith in 1768. I have not been able to trace his ancestry, but he had a ggg grandson Willie John Irvine who was alive in Sandwick in 1963. There was (also?) an Isabla Irvine who married a George Mowat in 1781, so unless she married twice there is a remote possibility that it was this Isabla rather than yours who was the daughter of John and Jannet. OFHS Monumental Inscriptions of Sandwick has: "1H/54: In memory of Robert Hourston of Lykin who departed this life on the 28th January 1801 aged 33 years. Also of Isabella, daughter of the above Robert Hourston, who died 28th June 1811 aged 10 years." This suggests that there were indeed only two children. Clouston's Records of the Earldom of Orkney p459 has: "John Louttit of Lyking bonded Lyking to Alex. Hourston of Benziecleat, to whose sons it passed 14.3.1751." James Irvine. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 12, 2006 1:34 AM Subject: John Robertson /Margaret Hourston >I am trying to find out a wee bit more about John Robertson, son of John > Robertson and Christian Johnston who was born 1797 in Stromness.
