Thank you for the reference to the web site. It adds the information that Jane came from Westray, as I did not have the 1851 Census link. I was also interested in the 1841 reference to them living at School Place in Kirkwall. I am sure I have other references to that address for the SLATER family. I shall have to do some digging in my, at the moment, somewhat disorganised files. I am also intrigued by the sudden introduction of a range of second given names. "Robina Fotheringham Sclater, born 12th October 1828 Robert Drever Sclater, born 15th October 1830 David Drever Sclater, born 11th August 1833 William Sclater, born 3rd July 1837 Peter Gray Sclater (or perhaps Peter Hay Sclater) born 16th November 1840" I had assumed that this would help in tracing them in the Statutory Registers, but it does not seem to be the case. I have also not yet been able to identify why these particular names should have been chosen. Any links? Robert Slater
