While visiting the library in Glasgow, trying to find my elusive Sinclair's I came across two parish relief records which should be useful to someone: John Sinclair residing at 109 Dale St, Glasgow, name on door Mitchell age 53 (This changes) Application number 107488 date applied for medical relief (what we would call Incapacity Benefit today), 12/01/1909 at 11.30 am. Place of Birth Kirkwall. Parents, Robert Sinclair, Blacksmith, Dead and Jessie Garrioch, afterwards the wife of John Mitchell, Clerk, Dead. Religion: Protestant Single Trade: Hammerman Partly Disabled First application for medical relief. Inspectors report: 13/01/1909 John Sinclair age 51 residing at 109 Dale St, Tradeston, Glasgow, Born in Kirkwall the illegitimate son of Robert Sinclair, Blacksmith and Jessie Garrioch. She is the widow of John Mitchell, writer and resides at 109 Dale St. He has resided at this address for 14 years with his mother, who corroborates this by providing rent receipts for the last 4 years. Settlement in Govan Parish. Certified as having Cardiac Disease. Currently in no benefits levy, has no means, residing with mother and applies for medical relief. Signed William Steel. John was certified unfit for work bt a Doctor Taylor of 74 Nelson St. Glasgow, on 11/01/09. =================================================================== Peter Sinclair residing at 16 Crawford St, Glasgow. Application number 132687 made on 06/06/1911. Place of birth Stromness Parents John Sinclair, a farmer and Janet Fraser both dead. Married to Helen Webster, aged 40 born Dundee. Married 15/01/1901 at 7 Clark St, Kilmarnock. Wifes parents William Webster , a commercial traveller and Helen Linklater, both dead. Family: Grace age 17 born South Tottenham, London. she is a single woman and is idle. Peter born 09/03/1901 at 7 Clark St, Kilmarnock. John born 03/10/1903 at 4 (unreadable) Bay, Kilmarnock. Martha born 24/06/1905 at 83 Low Glencairn St, Kilmarnock. Allan born 17/12/1910 at 16 Crawford St, Partick, Glasgow. Living at present address for 4 years. Condition gastro intestinal catarch. Parish: Govan Inspectors remarks: Off work since last Saturday lifted 30 Shillings in Wages. In poorhouse for treatment 09/06/1911, left 10/06/1911.
