Hello Fiona & Ken. My name is Alison Chilvers (nee Taylor) from Christchurch New Zealand and my sister, father and grandfather (who came from Orkney) all had the middle name of Spence from Birsay so maybe there is some connection. Thomas Spence born 1783 married Katherine Brech and one of their children Catherine Spence born 1804 married James Taylor who was my great x2 grandfather. I don't have any other details but would be keen to know if there is any connection with the Nicol Spence you are enquiring about. Hello Ken, Fiona, and Alison This is probably a long shot but I also have Spence ancestors. However, as far as I know they were from Harray (which is right next door to Birsay). Margaret Spence b.29 Oct 1838 m. Thomas Linklater on 24 Sep 1857 in Harray. They emigrated to Hastings Ontario Canada circa 1857/8. Margaret's parents were William Spence b. 1805/1806 and Betty Brown b. 1800/1801.
