    1. School Pictures from Widewall Orkney
    2. Jim Menzies
    3. This email fixes census info. My grandfather, David Douglas Menzies, was a school teacher at the elementary school in Widewall, South Ronaldsay, Orkney between approximately 1892 to 1899. I am fortunate to have 3 pictures taken at the schoolhouse of him with the students and other teachers during this time frame. Exact years are not known, but are based on the fact that he was married in Kirkwall in 1892, and is listed on the census for Reay, Caithness in 1901 as a teacher there. In addition, there is one picture of a gentleman and three women taken by the same photographer. All the individuals in this picture are unknown. However, as these pictures were handed down from my grandparents, there would likely be some relationship to these unknown individuals, possibly school related. With the kind and generous help of Lisa at Southronaldsay.net these pictures are now posted on their site at (direct link to pictures): <http://www.southronaldsay.net/1821/notes/people-JM~032_031_021_024.html> http://www.southronaldsay.net/1821/notes/people-JM~032_031_021_024.html She has taken the time and effort to number all of the individuals in the hope that they may be identified, or that others may have these same pictures in their family album, hopefully with some names written down. To provide some help with the teachers, both Lisa and Jim have provided me with census information for teacher in the area for 1891 and 1901. This may provide some reference point for their descendants, and any knowledge of where and when their ancestors taught would be appreciated. I am not overly familiar with the locations shown, but trust their judgment. For anyone who actually lives in the area and would be willing to help, information on the location of the schoolhouse in Widewall, such as street name and present use (since its not longer used as a school) would be much appreciated. A picture of it today would be wonderful.
