    3. The book is Pateus Amicis: The Story of the House of Graemeshall in Orkney, by Patrick Sutherland-Graeme, the 9th Laird, published in 1936, pp64, A5, illustrated. The only picture of the servants, dated "prior to 1874", faces p10. The book is rare, but a copy comes up at the Auction Mart Sale most years, going for £14-£42. There are two other excellent books on the estate/parish: An Orkney Estate: Improvement at Graemeshall 1827-1888 by Gilbert Schrank, 1995, pp131 A5, illustrated (part of the same picture of the servants appears on the front cover), and A More Enterprising Spirit: The Parish and People of Holm in 18th Century Orkney by Sheena Wenham, 2001, pp352, A5, illustrated. The latter is still in print, available from www.orcadian.co.uk for £16.95 + p&p. Graemeshall is 1/2 km NE of the northernmost of the Churchill Barriers that connect the South Isles with the Mainland of Orkney, grid reference HY487017. Find www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap , tick "Proceed" at the bottom of their first page, and enter this reference in "Search" at the top of their second page. My wife and I went there for a visit earlier this year and found it really interesting. It is now full of a large private collection of antiques collected by Norrie Wood over his lifetime. There is a book about the previous occupants of the house including pictures of servants. Can't remember the name of the author at the moment but I'm sure somebody will come back to you with that information. If not, contact me and I will find out for you.
