Helen, When Margaret Ann Brass died (unmarried) in 1918 her parents were given as Sybella Linklater and William Brass (reputed father). From that I think we can assume that Sybella and William were not married and it is more than possible that William did not die but moved elsewhere. Mike has highlighted the three most likely candidates. >There is a William Brass christened 25 Aug 1812 to Thomas Brass and Jannet >Lanskel in Sandwick He married Margaret Flett in 1838 and had a son, William, in 1839. He is absent from Orkney records from that time on but reappears in Edinburgh in 1850 when he marries Henrietta Sabiston or Peterkin. He spent the rest of his days in Edinburgh. >There is a William Brass born or baptized 25 Dec 1821 to David Brass and >Janet Garson in Sandwick. By 1847 his family lived in Stromness. William was a seaman and jumped ship in New York in October 1847. By 1852 he appears to have settled in Australia where he died in 1857. >There is another William Brass Christened 16 Oct 1825 to James Brass and >Cathrine Stanger in Sandwick I believe he was with the Hudson Bay Company and settled in Northwest Territories. He is not in Orkney at the time of the 1851 census. I do not have easy access to the actual OPR microfilm which may shed some light on which William Brass was the father. Perhaps another list member would look up the 1847 baptism entry for Margaret. I am not aware of any aliment or other proceeding in the SC records relating to Margaret's birth. Hope this helps. Stuart, well that's more info than I bargained for! Very interesting indeed. Anyway, I'm also happy to have Margt Brass's details.
