Has anyone any information on the Rev William Anderson, and his family, who was minister in Walls. He was born Abt. 1799 and he died in Walls Abt. 1865, buried in Osmundwall. His wife was Lucy Murray and they had 7 children. I have found that he had a profound influence on my GGrand Uncle Robert Wright so I would like very much to know more about the family and what became of them all. He marr. 17th July 1845 Lucy Hay (died 20th April 1865), daugh. of David Murray, min. of Dysart, Fife, and had issue - Margaret, born 16th Dec.1846 (marr. Robert Wright, min. of Dairsie [Fife]); Janet Burn born 31st Oct 1848; Davina Lucy Murray born 19th July 1850 (marr. Many thanks for your reply and information James - I couldn't find Rev William in Smith's "The Church of Orkney". What a tragedy. The parents and the two youngest children dead within a six week period. I would be cautious on assuming Orkney's health statistics being similar to Scotland as a whole, not least because all the examples in Knox's article appear to relate to urban circumstances which I suspect were worse than rural. But the subject is very complex, as population statistics are as much a function of migration (typically of young families) and birth rates as of health.
