I have an Alexander Stephen (Steven) and Katherine (Catherine) McLeod marriage. From Caithness OPR index: (1795) Alexr. Stephen in Stroma, parish of Canisbay and Katherine McLeod in Harpsdale parish of Halkirk. Contracted Febry 24th and Married March 12th. (Ref.OPRm/Canisbay 35/1/p225) Children as follows:- (1798) John son to Alexr Stephen and Catherine McLeod in Stroma born the 25th and baptised the 28 Feby. (1799) James son to Alexr. Steven and Catherine McLeod in Stroma born the 1 and baptised the 8th Decr. (1801) Janet Daughter to Alexander Steven and Cath. McLeod in Stroma born the 1st and baptised the 13th Novr. (Ref. OPRb/Canisbay 35/1/p218 (1803) George son to Alexr. Stephen and Katherine McLeod in Stroma born 25th and bapt. 30th Decr. (1806) Alexr. son to Alexr. Steven and Catherine McLeod in Stroma (born) 1st and baptd. 20th, January. (1808) Helen Daur. to Alexander Steven Catherine McLeod in the Island of Stroma, born 20th Feby. and baptd. 6th March. (1810) Donald Son to Alexander Stephen in Stroma by his wife Kathirine MacLeod. Born 25th March. Baptd. 4th April. (1812) Robert lawful son of Alexander Stephen and Catherine Mcleod in Stroma was born March 31st. Baptd. April 6th. (1814) Margaret lawful Daughter to Alex. Stephen and Catharine McLeod in Stroma born 15th and bapd.23d April. (1816) William lawful son of Alexander Stephen and Catharine McLeod, Stroma born 9 bapt. 13 June. It is likely that Alexander Stephen was dead by the time of the 1841 census as indicated below. Entry from 1841 census for Island of Stroma:- 7th June, 1841 Catharine McLeod 70 Cottager Born in county Donald Steven 25 Fisherman Born in county George Steven 20 Fisherman Born in county William Steven 20 Fisherman Born in county 1851 census:- Stroma - 31st March 1851 Catherine Steven (Head), Married, 71, Farmer of 6 acres (employing 2 servants) Born Caithness, Halkirk George Steven (Son) unmarried, 45, Farmer's son Alexr. Steven (son) unmarried, 43, Fisherman & Ag.Lab Donald Steven (son)unmarried, 38, Farm servant William Steven (son)unmarried, 34, Fisherman and Ag. Lab. The only birth I have managed to trace for Alexander Steven/Stephen (husband of Catherine McLeod) recorded in Canisbay was the son of Magnus Stephen and Helen Banks on 25th June 1767. This seems quite early for someone who married in 1804 but is possible. The other point is that there were no sons named Magnus. There are two possible Catherine McLeod births in Halkirk. The daughter of William NcLeod and Margaret Murray recorded on 12.1.1787 and also of George McLeod and Margt. McLeod on 24.3.1776. My connection to Alexander Stephen and Catherine McLeod is through their daughter Janet Stephen.
