Hi all I have this information but realy want to know if they are the same person. Is the christening of Thomas that far apart from his birth? I can't find another Thomas for the right era/date. The first Thoams TAYLOR in 1796 ties in with one of his children being one of mine. I do hope that someone can help me with this problem and I thank you in advance for reading my entry Thomas TAYLOR (M)..................... Bernice, your question is one of many attributable to the pecularities of working from the IGI rather than the original parish registers. In "IGI speak", the word "about" is one of several indicators of data that was not included in the original registers but has been added to the IGI by LDS church members. Sometimes such data is useful, but in this case I suggest you ignore it. My strong suspicion is that "1796" is just a guess, derived by subtracting an arbitrary number of years from the date of his first marriage to Margaret Smith. At this time the interval between birth and christening was usually less than a month. (See also p.18 of my book "Trace Your Orkney Ancestors".) On where Dykes is, why not ask Allan? I cannot see it in the Sandwick 1841 census. The OFHS transcription and original of this census both clearly show a Thomas Taylor aged 40 [ages are rounded down in this census] with his family in the township of Housegarth in Sandwick. In 1821 he was aged 23, with his parents in the farm of Bean, Housegarth. In 1851 he was aged 53, with his family, 334 acres and 3 labourers in Bain, Housegarth. He was there again in 1861 and, as a widower, in 1871. He died aged 84 in December 1882 and is buried with several members of his family in St.Peter's Sandwick (see OFHS booklet 1E/31 & 1F/29). The later census' show he was born in Birsay. The genuki website shows John Moar may be able to help you with this family. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Berenice" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 31, 2005 7:34 PM Subject: Thomas TAYLOR, abt 1796, Sandwick > Hi all > I have this information but realy want to know if they are the same > person. Hi James Thank you for getting in touch about my Thomas TAYLOR I think the dame as you, that 1796 is a guess so am going along with the christening date of 30th Jan 1798 I have a copy of the 1871 census with him and someof his children from his second mairriage there. He is a farmer of 25 acres so with you saying that he was a farmer of 334 acres he must have sold or given to his children a lot of land. I also have the entry for his death with his second wife as Catherine TWATT who had died by this time. I haven't been able to get the any of the other census' yet but that is great to know where he is buried etc. I need to buy a detalied map of Orkney as I am completely lost here with place names. With you saying that he is 23 while living with his parents in 1821 that makes my birthdate right also Thank you so much for replying to my mail, I really appreciate this information that you have searched and given to me. My line is Thomas TAYLOR's son DAVID b 14 Sept 1831 He was a carpenter/shipwright and got married in Govan, Glasgow to an Irish lassie He is given as living on board a ship called the "Harold" at the time of his marriage He died 21 Oct 1887 in Govan Can you guide me to where John Moar's site is? Thank you again and Kind regards Berenice in Ayrshire ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Irvine" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 15, 2005 12:06 PM Subject: [Orkney] Re: Thomas TAYLOR, abt 1796, Sandwick > Bernice, your question is one of many attributable to the pecularities of > working from the IGI rather than the original parish registers.
