    1. Warbister
    2. Several members were very quick last week to locate "Warsetter" for me on Sanday, and now I see I have another reference to "Warbister" which appears from the context of the document to have been on Hoy. I don't have LandRanger 7 which covers Hoy, and can not find this Warbister on the bits of Hoy which show on the other maps. Can someone help me with this, please? Where was/is Warbister? The reference is to "Warbister beneath the hill", if that helps ... Thank you in advance ..... Ken Harrison North Vancouver, Canada Only a genealogist regards a step backwards as PROGRESS ... 3. Hugh Marwick's Orkney Farm-Names (1952) has under Hoy: "Warbuster: Werbuster beneth the hill (a 9d land) 1500; Warbister 1627 [Peterkin iii, 38]; Warbuster by South the Burne (9d land), and W- by North the Burne (9d land) 1739. The dual Warbuster of 1739 had replaced the former Beneath the Hill; the burn referred to was evidently that running down from Orgill. The name is now obsolete. O[ld] N[orse] "varo-bolstaor", 'beacon-bister'; the varo- in this case must have had reference to the Ward Hill of Hoy which towers up precipitously immediately behind the tunship." The name appears on Blaeu's 1654 map (www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/early/blaeu) and the 1872 OS map (www.old-map.co.uk). The latter implies Warbuster by South is now the Hoy Outdoor Centre shown on the current 1:25000 map. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 07, 2005 12:47 AM Subject: Warbister > Several members were very quick last week to locate "Warsetter" for me on > Sanday, and now I see I have another reference to "Warbister" which > appears from > the context of the document to have been on Hoy. > > I don't have LandRanger 7 which covers Hoy, and can not find this > Warbister > on the bits of Hoy which show on the other maps. > > Can someone help me with this, please?
