BTW, as I've been transcribing the civil births, I double-check with the marriage registers to see if the marriage date given in each register is the same. Frequently, it is not. For those looking for signatures of your ANNAL ancestors, just wanted to let you know there is a particularly good example of the signature of Peter Annal, who was the spouse of Ann Cromarty, in the 1875 birth register for his grandson, John Annal "Russland" (Rusland), Junior. Peter Annal and Ann Cromarty's daughter, Ann Cromarty Annal, married John Annal Rusland in 1874. In early May of 1875, John Annal Rusland [Senior] was found drowned in the sea off Grimness Head. In September of 1875, their son, John Annal "Russland" [Junior] was born and Peter Annal, the grandfather, signed his name on his grandson's birth register. I think Peter Annal would have been in his mid-70's at the time of this signature. I am trying to find out as much information as I can about Capt William Sinclair born abt 1847 in Orkney. Does anyone have information on his parents. He married a Catherine Allan born abt 1844 in Orkney Capt William Sinclair died on 30/03/1890 of dropsy. This is from the minor records on SP Statutory Deaths 022/MR 0435 He was Master of the ship Kinross. It states that he died of dropsy and that his last place of abode was Liverpool. Hi Marilyn I too find it difficult to understand. The John you show as the son of Magnus is unfortunately not my John Sinclair. They were born at around the same time according to the 1821 census. Given the naming routine, my John's father should be John also as he named his first son John, which would be after his sons grandfather, I think that is right. If there is a South Brooke in Burray and it was pronounced as such, I doubt if it would be an old name and it might perhaps be a nineteenth century invention. There are some pretty improbable names in Orkney, though! It does seem a bit of a coincidence that we can't find a South Brooke but we can find a South Breck/Southbreck. William My direct line comes from Alexander Cromarty and Margaret Stewart. Their daughter Margaret( born 18 Sep 1811) married James Sinclair (born 2 Sep 1821). There are a number of places we could tie in as my father's side of the family goes back to the late 1300s in South Ronaldsay. St Peters in the North and St. Marys in the South of South Ronaldsay is where I get a number of my ancesters. Hi Bruce (and Norman and Willie) -- I viewed the 1881 census for this family too (since I last emailed) and now I feel that the place meant for the 1874 birth register was indeed South Breck, Burray. And yet, Bruce, when I still look at the 1874 birth register entry, that one word sure looks like "Brooke" to me. When I look at W.T.N. Forbes' handwriting as a whole, Mr. Forbes portrayed his "-c's " a bit differently than what was shown in this instance. Blake, I had saved your mail in my inbox which is now very cluttered, and had been remiss in not replying, so I am trying to sort that now. My ancestor ,Andrew Strang, had three wives, one of whom was Isabella Cruikshank They had a daughter Eliza b 1807 d 1859 in St. Margaret's Hope. She married James Allan, Shipmaster, in 1837. They had a daughter named Mary Kennedy Allan born the same year.The coincidence of names, Kennedy and Allan, seems too close to be accidental. I have not pursued this line very vigorously, but when I was in Stromness Cemetery in May this year, I found James and Mary Allan's headstone, which also had Isabella Strang commemorated on it. I have photographs of the memorial.
