There's more about the problem here which suggests that it's now been remedied: http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showpost.php?p=206513&postcount=83 Norman T.
Willie, how did you find that out? Was your own computer infected by visiting that site? What virus is it? Norman Tulloch
Hugh Wallis site which provides IGI batch numbers has a very dangerous virus attached to it. If you access the site through the following address http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#Page you will be OK. If you try to access the site without the 'IGIBatchNumbers' etc ending (i.e. stopping after the ~hughwallis bit) you will be left open to malicious script. You WILL run a high risk of problems through the virus attacking your system. Willie Sinclair
The Wallis site was blocked for the last week, a virus was the only rumor that came through the Lists I'm on. You could not access the data pages, only the homepage. No data could be brought up. Its been owned by Ancestry.com for several months, Hugh Wallis reported via the Dunbartonshire List [forwarded by a subscriber] that he had no control of it for months and didn't know what the problem was. A secondary URL was circulated about 2 days ago, it was an web.archive version of the site, but still you could not get to the data, it just seemed to be back to normal as you could now get to the searchpages. Yesterday, it came up normally running as expected after I was informed on a List of its revitalization, and I've used it since then at the same bookmarked address I have always used. That is the same address William Sinclair sent, so it is evidently back to its old self...except more people know now that Hugh is no longer running it. Thanks to William for sending the URL, I could check it against my old bookmark. Should anyone wish to read what was forwarded to the Dunbartonshire List, here is a link to the archived post as I've been warned never to forward or copy/paste anyone's post without permission. But I certainly can send a URL for others to read it in the Archives. I hope Ancestry does not plaster the site with its ads, but leaves the database alone. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DUNBARTONSHIRE-GENWEB/2008-10/1223874688 Meg Greenwood ==========================

My suggestion is that you contact your local museum or archives and ask the archivist how to preserve and store the letters. You are lucky, I only dream of such a find. Also, you can then make CDs from the scans to send to other family members. Charlie Petersen
I have just received a box full of letters written from about 1900 to 1930. Some are very brittle and turning brown. Many are folded in their original envelopes. What is the best way for me to preserve them? I would like to transcribe the letters and share them with others who might be interested. But I do not know what is the best way to share them. The letters include every day happenings: weddings attended, babies being born, soldiers being sent away, Christmas presents and the like. The majority of the letters were written by Jemima Heddle (b.1846), daughter of Edward Ellicott Heddle and Frances Sutherland, to my grandmother Jane Hughes Heddle, her niece. Other letters were written by other family members. Do you think anyone would be interested in their contents? Also I received the funeral notice for Jemima Heddle from her sister Jean (Jane?), which included the name of the cemetery where she is buried. I think that other members of the cemetery might be buries there. How can I find out about who is buried in a cemetery in Edinburgh? It may take me a long time to transcribe the letters from Jemima Heddle because her writing is so stylized I can barely read it. Thanks for any help you can give me. Margaret VanAuker mvanauker@hughes.net
Willie's suggestion is best - then put the original letters in archival quality plastic sleeves - they also make 5x7 envelope sized double sleeves. You can read them through the plastic if you need to double check the scan without handling the originals Jane --- On Mon, 10/13/08, William Sinclair <sensiblegrandad@googlemail.com> wrote: > From: William Sinclair <sensiblegrandad@googlemail.com> > Subject: Re: [ORKNEY] help needed > To: orkney@rootsweb.com > Date: Monday, October 13, 2008, 4:58 PM > Is it possible for you to scan the letters and save them on > your > computer, that would allow you to work on them without > doing them any > more damage. > > Willie Sinclair > > 2008/10/13 Betsy VanAuker <mvanauker@hughes.net>: > > I have just received a box full of letters written > from about 1900 to 1930. > > Some are very brittle and turning brown. Hi Ken Elizabeth's son, James Hourston married Ellen Spence, daughter of Robert Spence and Isabella Whitelaw. Robert was the miller at Boardhouse Mill. Fiona, Like you, I have more Spences in my data to whom I can NOT find a connection than those to whom I can find a connection. I probably have some of yours lost in my data but don't have enough firm dates to clearly identify them. Your names below are tempting, and I have multiple copies of each of the Spence names. If you would like to contact me off-List with some dates or other identifiers I will try to match them to some of my "unknowns". Robert was the miller at Boardhouse Mill. He was a son of Robert Spence and Margaret Peebles from Crook Birsay. I have quite a large number of Spences in my family which makes it difficult at times.
