    1. [ORKNEY] Marriage by "Habit and Repute"
    2. Robert SLATER
    3. I seem to be having a very bad run in attempting to locate Orkney marriages in the period 1750 to 1850 in the Old Parish Records. At the moment I am scoring well below 50%, and probably below 25%, even of those for whom later records (of baptisms) indicate that the parents were married. Is this a case of lost records, although the gaps are not apparent, just bad record keeping, although the baptisms seem to be much better, or were there just a high percentage of marriages by habit and repute? 3. Christine Stone I have been looking at your Margaret MacDonald........I am really at a loss as well The only MacDonald's in South Ronaldsay .....well there in 1820 were my MacDonalds', William and Elizabeth and family Now fifteen years earlier...........who knows, I am sure there were a lot of families flittering around due to the clearances in Sutherland and Caithness I know of an Angus MacDonald who had a couple of kids in the Orkney but was settled in Sutherland......time frame you are looking for as well, I think there were men that were fishermen that may have been here and there by times, and in good weather maybe the family went along? Now one thing I would like to know is how do you know that this Margaret MacDonald was born in South Ronaldsay? Have you gotten a death certificate on her? Any clues there? I know England did not usually put parents in on deaths so that might be for not. I guess one more question I might have for you is what is the child line up? It might give us a clue on parent names if they followed the rule of naming children in that time frame. Cathy Wagner

    1. [ORKNEY] Anne Sinclair died 27 Aug 1910
    2. William Sinclair
    3. I would be grateful if anyone could provide an answer to the following. I have an Anne Sinclair born 15 July 1827 to John Sinclair and Barbara Cromarty. She never married and died 27 Aug 1910 in East End St Margarets Hope. Her death registry states that she was a pauper. I do not think she had any siblings living in South Ronaldsay at the time she died. It was the undertaker who registered the death. My question is if she was a pauper when she died, where is she likely to have been buried and would there be a marker for her grave. I have taken photographs of the Sinclair headstones in St Peters South Ronaldsay and she is not mentioned on any of the stones there. It would be a shame if she was unrecognised. William Sinclair

Hi Lisa I have found where I downloaded the PDF. http://www.archive.org/details/orkneysshetlandt00tudo The above link is direct to the book TUDOR, JOHN R. - The Orkneys and Shetland, Their Past and Present State However if you type Orkney in the search bar and leave it at American Libraries you will get a list of other Orkney books that have been digitised and can be downloaded.
