Hi Lisa Thanks for the information. Janet Fraser has sent me information that agrees with your findings. Now all you have to do is discover that Solomon Guthrie and my Anne Guthrie were siblings. Not much to ask I know. I have one of my strange theories on this. That I will bother you with later, well as soon as I can work it out myself, because even for me this may be far fetched. :-) Willie 2008/11/11 Lisa Conrad <nisus00@earthlink.net>: > Hi Willie, > > The below is THEORY only. > > There was an "Archibald Sinclair" born 21st December 1893, Grimness, So > Ronaldsay (the birth was in Dec.1893 but was registered in 1894, on > January 2nd). > > For the father, the birth register shows "James Banks Sinclair, Farm > Servant" and his wife's name was "Isabella" McKenzie -- "Isabella" was > written first, but then crossed out by the Registrar, Wm. I have been trying to find information regarding A. Sinclair and his parents. According to the information below he was said to come from South Ronaldsay. I have looked through the 1901 Census but I cannot see this family, does anyone have information about them they would be willing to share. >From the CGWC Name: SINCLAIR Initials: A Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Unit Text: 219th Coy. Hi Willie, The below is THEORY only. There was an "Archibald Sinclair" born 21st December 1893, Grimness, So Ronaldsay (the birth was in Dec.1893 but was registered in 1894, on January 2nd). For the father, the birth register shows "James Banks Sinclair, Farm Servant" and his wife's name was "Isabella" McKenzie -- "Isabella" was written first, but then crossed out by the Registrar, Wm. B. Swanson, and "Annabella" was then written above it. There is a marriage of James Sinclair to Annabella McKenzie on 12th November 1885, Grimness, So. Ronaldsay. From my marriages web site, this excerpt: _____ __ *>> 1885- Page 7 #13 / November* -- *>> *James *SINCLAIR*--[Brecks, Grimness] -- *>> * -married- *>> *Annabella *McKENZIE*--[Grimness] -- *>> * parents of groom: Magnus *SINCLAIR*/Margaret *BERSTON* -- *>> * parents of bride: Archibald *McKENZIE*/Mary *ANNAL* --_ *>> * Witnesses: James *CROMARTY*, Barbara *SINCLAIR*. *>> * [listed as a _Deceased Parent_: Magnus *SINCLAIR*] _____ __ I then went to look for a 7-9 yr old "A Sinclair" on So Ronaldsay in the 1901 Census for same, and found this family among the three hits returned: _____ __ [-- my adaptation of the GROS ref.#: C1901-029_00_004-00_010.tif--] 1901 So Ronaldsay Census- Civil Parish of So Ronaldshay and Burray, North Parish, Grimness: 54-- Myres-- - James Sinclair- Head- Married- 38- Crofter- born Burray - Annabella Sinclair- Wife- Married- 38- Crofter's Wife- born So. Twenty hits returned on my search, and there was that one which you reference from CGWC, that of Service No.106149, age 24, born in Scotland, died 1-10-18. The name shown for that is "Archibald Sinclair". [my] GROS ref.# for this death is - D1918_131_AF_0227.tif I leave it to you to draw your own conclusions! Naturally, further research needed to verify fully... most likely by contacting descendants of this Sinclair family line. :-) - Lisa.
I would be interested in the birth extract for Robina. I do not have this information. James and Jean may well have been in Edinburgh in 1861. I think I have the marriage of Robina in South Leith on January 20, in 1850, when she married William HULBERT, a seaman. Robina (no mention of the Fotheringham) is described as the daughter of James SLATER, Carpenter, Kirkwall. Thank you for the reference. It confirms what I have found recently. I wonder whether all churches had them, or perhaps only the larger churches, or perhaps only in some areas? I also wonder who appointed them, discharged them if they did not carry out their duties, and fixed their salary? Because of all the opportunities for references to them in the ongoing business of each church, I would have expected to have found references to them in the Session minutes. Another of life's little mysteries. Robert Slater

Thank you for the reference to the web site. It adds the information that Jane came from Westray, as I did not have the 1851 Census link. I was also interested in the 1841 reference to them living at School Place in Kirkwall. I am sure I have other references to that address for the SLATER family. I shall have to do some digging in my, at the moment, somewhat disorganised files. I am also intrigued by the sudden introduction of a range of second given names. "Robina Fotheringham Sclater, born 12th October 1828 Robert Drever Sclater, born 15th October 1830 David Drever Sclater, born 11th August 1833 William Sclater, born 3rd July 1837 Peter Gray Sclater (or perhaps Peter Hay Sclater) born 16th November 1840" I had assumed that this would help in tracing them in the Statutory Registers, but it does not seem to be the case. I have also not yet been able to identify why these particular names should have been chosen. Any links? Robert Slater

The information we found about James Sclater and his wife Jane Gray can be seen at http://genealogy.northern-skies.net/gray.php?number=304 If anyone can add to the information we have, we would be happy to hear from you.
