Hi- It never dawned on me to look for long-ago relatives from Orkney in the Hudsons Bay Co archives http://www.gov.mb.ca:80/chc/archives/hbca/biographical/index.html because my THOMAS THOMSON and ELIZABETH BURGAR emigrated to Nova Scotia ca 1810 and we have no family tradition of links with the HBC- however, some of Thomas' sibling- notably bro JOHN THOMSON of Papa Westray and later Kirkwall- may have had offspring work for the HBC- wondering if anyone can help with parents/siblings of : JOHN A THOMSON- from South Ronaldsay, started w/ HBC 1850 died in western Canada. JOHN C THOMSON from South Ronaldsay, joined HBC 1867 JOHN THOMSON from S. Ronaldsay, joined HBC 1863 died 1864. JOHN D THOMSON from S Ronaldsay, joined HBC 1876. Also- Where is Milster House in Orkney ? HBC records have a JAMES THOMSON who started work with HBC in 1770, was stranded on ice floe and died 1772. Thanks, Dutch Thompson in PEI Canada

It's a pity that the auction description doesn't give any indication of the contents of the letter. I can't read any of it from the picture on eBay, apart from a few words: http://tinyurl.com/6ejg44 Norman T.
I saw the following being sold on e-bay SCOTLAND: Orkneys. Envelope with 4 page letter from David Balfour at Cliffdale, envelope franked by 4 margin 1d red , 207 Kirkwall cancellation, and KIRKWALL, EDINBURGH, BERWICK, BELFORD and CHATTON udc to reverse. The letter is dated 1846. Current price is £4.99 with two days to go. I am sure it will be of interest to someone on the list. Willie Sinclair
Hi Norman This is the information I have Lisa has it as Eastside Kirkhouse and I bow to her knowledge on this. John on the 1821 Census Lisa Conrad has transcribed the 1821 Census with the following information: John was a farmer living at 186 Kirkhouse with his wife Ann Guthrie and his family. They had 4 sons that are known of, John aged 31 a fisherman, who later married Barbara Cromarty, William aged 20 a carpenter, whom I can find no trace of after this date. Peter aged 29 , also a carpenter later married Sinclair Anderson and James aged 17, who later married Isabella Anderson, who was the sister of Sinclair Anderson. They also had a daughter Ann living with them at this time, whom I can find no trace of after 1841. ---------------------------------------------------- John on 1841 Census Name: Jno (John) Sinclair Age: 75 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1766 Gender: Male Where born: Orkney and Shetland, Scotland Civil Parish: South Ronaldsay St Peters County: Orkney and Shetland Address: Kirkhouse Occupation: Ind Household Members: Name Age Catharine Brown 45 W Brown 10 Ann Sinclair 75 Ann Sinclair 40 Jno Sinclair 75 Willie Sinclair 2008/12/13 Norman Tulloch <norman@nwtulloch.vispa.com>: > I assume it's this Kirkhouse that you're referring to, Willie: > > http://tinyurl.com/69op5a > > In "The Place-Names of South Ronaldsay & Burray", Gregor Lamb says of > it, "Paplay 1841; occupied; private house adjacent to St Peter's Kirk." > > St Peter's Kirk is marked with a cross on the map. I assume it's this Kirkhouse that you're referring to, Willie: http://tinyurl.com/69op5a In "The Place-Names of South Ronaldsay & Burray", Gregor Lamb says of it, "Paplay 1841; occupied; private house adjacent to St Peter's Kirk." St Peter's Kirk is marked with a cross on the map. Of Paplay, Lamb says,"Papley/Paplay a district; ON [Old Norse] Papyli = Papa-byli; ON papi priest; byli place of residence; compare Papdale in Kirkwall and Papa Westray; St Peter's Kirk was established in Papley and gave the name 'St Peter's' to the whole of what is now North Parish." The other Kirkhouse in South Ronaldsay is this one: http://tinyurl.com/623wzz However, I don't think that's the one you're interested in. Norman T.
The furthest records of my Sinclair family are that they were living in Kirkhouse Eatside South Ronaldsay in 1821. Was Kirkhouse an area or farm in the Eastside or was it the Kirhouse itself. Willie Sinclair
This info regarding Yorstons in NS and nearby Prince Edward Island appeared recently in The Island Register. I am not connected to this family but know some descendants still living on PEI. http://www.islandregister.com/yorstonhistory.html cheers Thompson in PEI searching THOMSON/BURGAR/COOPER in Westray & Papa W.

I have been asked by a friend for some information surrounding the North Ronaldsay clearances in the 1800's. I have to admit complete ignorance in this. I would be grateful if someone could provide any insight to what happened or provide details of where I could find some information. Willie Sinclair
Hi all I am hoping someone can assist me with the following. I am looking for the parents and any other information of John Sinclair who had a child with Helen Walls born abt 1861 in South Ronaldsay, they were unmarried. In 1861 Helen was living at Lythes. The childs name was John Sinclair who later married Margaret Flaws Sinclair. I would also appreciate any information on Helen, if and who she married. Any assistance appreciated. Willie Sinclair
Roland Sinclair's "Orcadian Families", not the most reliable of sources, has under "Stewart of Burray": William Stewart of Mains, fl.1637 (and evidently 1654), 2nd son of Alexander Stewart 5th of Garlies and Christian, dau. of Sir William Douglas of Drumlanrig, married Barbara, dau. and heir of James Stewart of Burray, son of Henry Stewart of Buchlivie and Janet McLeod (died a.1625). Their children included: - James Stewart, yr of Mains, who was tutor to bairns of Rev.Walter Stewart of Masseter, whom I identifed as the writer of the texts reproduced in my book "Blaeu's Orkneys and Schetland"; - Henry, -1645, fought under Montrose; - William of Mains, fl. 1667; adjutant to Montrose at Philipaugh; and - Sir Archibald Stewart of Burray, who succeeded; supported Montrose, thrice captured, thrice escaped; created baronet 1687, died 1689. Married 1st Isobel Murray, 2nd servantrix Katherine Rowsay. Son by 1st: - Sir Archibald , -1704, married Margaret Stewart. Son: - Sir James Stewart of Burray, 3rd Baronet, who murdererd Capt. Moodie of Melsetter in Broad St. in 1725, and died in gao; in Southwark while awaiting trial as a Jocobite. A post today to the Wigtownshire List reminded me to check the downloadable books at www.ElectricScotland.com There are 4 titles containing the word Orkney, 2 currently available and 2 in progress. Check back in awhile to see if they are done...Meg G in OK ============= Orkney and Shetland : This is the account of Shetland from this book by T Mainland published in 1920. The Orkney Book : By John Gunn, M.A., D.Sc. (1909) These 2 titles are not yet completed : Guide to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland - Including Orkney and Zetland : descriptive of their scenery, statistics, antiquities, and natural history and directions for visiting the lowlands of Scotland with descriptive notices by George Anderson and Peter Anderson of Inverness (1850) Notice of Runic Inscriptions : Discovered during recent excavations in the Orkneys made by James Farrer, M.P. (1862) =============
Ancestry has available these records up to the name Nicolson. If anyone would like information regarding their Orkney relatives who served in WW1 whose name Nicolson or alphabetically before, just let me know. If possible the name and DOB would make the search easier. It is probably better just to send the request to my e-mail address. Willie Sinclair
