I live in northeast Ohio (Cleveland area) and we get this - it is a snow storm accompanied by thunder - very strange and in our area at least unusual. My ancestors [HALCRO, WILSON] lived on The Breck in Orphir. With the sea so close, do you suppose they ever saw the bay ice over ? What about those inlets nearby - the Loch of Kirbister and maybe the Loch of Stennes. It has to stay below freezing a long while for thick enough ice to form over inland [freshwater] ponds to ice-skate on. Being seawater, does it ever freeze at the surface ? I just heard from my daughter in Chicago, windchill is -40F. That's just too much for this Orklahoman to fathom. I'd have made a lousy pioneer. MEG =====================

Pshaw. We had "thundersnow" here in Seattle Thursday morning. Quite the thrill! I hear thundersnow can occur around Lake Ontario... perhaps some of our Orkney ancestors who emigrated to that area experienced this.
Have missed this thread, if someone would like the details from the Registrations of James THOMISON, I have taken data from his 1862 Birth and 1864 Death that are on film at the local FHC. Here are details : 1862 Births, Orphir #8 - James Thomison born 11 April, 1862 at 8am at Piggar to James Thomison, Labourer & Margaret Thomison ms Groundwater who wed 1849, Dec 6 at Manse of Orphir. Informant was the father who was present at the birth. Reg'd April 28, Orphir. Thos White, Reg'r. 1864 Deaths, Orphir #8 - James Thomison died Dec 13, 12pm at Toyness, Swanbister age 2y son of James Thomison, Fisherman & Margaret Thomison ms Groundwater. Cause was Croup, 3d, no medical attendant. Informant was the father who was present at the death. Reg'd Dec 16, Orphir. Wm Tait, Reg'r. Since 1855 events have so much information, I checked and found one 1855 birth to these parents. If someone is looking for further information on them, there is some here : 1855 Births, Orphir #9 - James Thomison born March 28, 1855 5pm at Piggar, Orphir to James Thomison, Farm Servant, 27y born Isle of Flotta & Margaret Thomison ms Groundwater, 25y born Orphir. They wed 1849, Orphir and had 2 girls and 1 boy living. Informant was the father. Reg'd April 9, Orphir. John Spence, Registrar. I have more data on many of the 10 children of James THOMISON and Margaret GROUNDWATER. Margaret had a brother named Alexander GROUNDWATER born 1819 in Orphir. He and his family [survived 3 wives] are the subject of "Memories of an Orkney Family" published 1967 by Henrietta GROUNDWATER. Since I already have a lot on this family, please write with any requests for information, I don't have to go back to the FHC to get it. Meg, Stop yer whimperin' Even here in "British California" it's been below freezin' for the past few days. My ancestors moved here over a century ago "because they don't have winter here" - I'm thinking of applying for a refund !! Oh, and there's some white stuff falling out of the sky right now. I have a friend who has a cousin who knows somebody from Ontario and I think I heard him mention this phenomenon. I'll have to phone him and see if he can explain it. <VBG> Ken Harrison North Vancouver, Canada -----Original Message----- From: orkney-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:orkney-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Meg Greenwood Sent: December 21, 2008 11:17 AM To: ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ORKNEY] 1864 Death,James THOMISON MegG in Oklahoma USA [where it got down to 7F last night, even the insides of our insulated windows showed ice on them].

Philip Apart from age as suggested below, what other info is on the death certificate? I have seen a few from Vancouver B.C. and they all had names of parents, and parent's birthplace, listed on them, which allowed me to verify I had the right person. However sometimes the info is not 100% correct, relatives who registered the death might not have known the exact names of James's parents, or may have assumed they were from Orkney when they were not! I started with the BC Vital Statistics, and could only find a James Thompson, not Thomson, who died that date in Vancouver. Given the recent interest in Canadian Thomsons I'd like to mention again my James Thomson who died in Vancouver on 12 December 1948 and who's death certificate says he was born on 13 April 1861 in the Orkney Islands. He was a prospector, hotelier, landlord and athlete and had financial and personal links with the Orkney Islands. However no record can be found of his birth or parents in Orkney. Thanks Bruce. That is a really nice shot of Melsetter House. I was more interested in the Thomson line. I had Thomson's marry into my Smith line but much later - 1850. I have Smith and Nicolson as my main names with Rich, Robson, Cromarty, Groat, Sutherland, Sinclair and a host of other names marrying in. They were all from around Longhope. I also had a George Thomson Smith born 1887 who went to America?? I have a suspicion that he may have gone to HBC.
